you can only change colours if you're in a SG =)

With the first free expansion you are supposed to be able to change your costume.

for emotes,

Click on the little "bubble" at the bottom right corner of the chat bar. Will bring up a list.

The first upgrade is supposed to be free. either that or I am totally off my rocker and read about another game.
