XMEN THE MAFIA - Day 4: Mafia Hit - Mistaken Identity

As the new day dawned, the mutants stirred beneath the earth. As the others prepared to leave for their newest destination, one lone mutant ascended the stairs out of the subway station in to the world above. Zone emerged, squinted in the bright sunlight, and crossed the street to an empty cafe, and went inside. He headed towards the back of the building, in to the kitchen, and waited. His mind was racing, turning over all the possibilities and implications of what he knew. He was nearly ready to burst at the seams, when he heard the back door of the café open and someone stepped inside.

Excited, Zone called out a greeting and hurried to meet the newcomer, only to stop in surprise when he noticed that his friend seemed… different. The most surprising change was that the other mutant was holding a large butcher knife, and looked as if they were ready to do murder. After a moment of hesitation, the other mutant lunged at Zone. In a cloud of red smoke, accompanied by a loud *splurt*, Zone dematerialized as the cleaver passed through him, and reappeared on the other side of the room. He quickly dashed out the door, only to get cracked across the face by a large metal pipe being swung by a second attacker, who had been waiting outside. He was knocked down by the blow, and before he could respond, a second blow cracked against the skull, smashing it between the hard ground and the iron pipe.

About half an hour later, Sabertooth and Quinn lead the mutants out from the subway station. As soon as the emerged, Sabertooth sniffed at the air, smelling an abundance of blood on the wind. A few minutes of searching located its source, and the mutants gathered in horror around the smashed corpse. After a long period of silence, Quinn spoke: “Well, that’s that. Let’s go.”

Quinn and her huge companion turned away from the scene and walked away, and were soon followed by the others on their way to their unknown destination. Quinn was deciding to keep things to herself, for now.

As Marcus was following Saber-tooth to their next destination, he kept thinking about Zone’s corpse. He had thought that zone may have been the one going around killing everyone; it would have certainly been easy for Zone to escape the crime scenes. But now that Zone himself had been murdered, perhaps he had been innocent. Decided to think of better things Marcus thought about his memories he had obtained since his transformation. He recalled the black cat he had obtained and named Whiskers at the institute. She had had kittens not too long before Marcus was captured. He was glad no one ever found it suspicious that Whiskers had gotten pregnant when there were no tom cats on the campus. A sudden gush of wind blew past, and brought the smell of Zone’s corpse to his canine nose, reminding him that he should keep his attention to the others, since the killers were most likely still here.

Cameleora was totally baffled by yet another grisly death in the dwindling group of mutants. It was bad enough the sentinels were out there but now every day and every way they turned another mutant met a tragic end. She had hoped for a chance to maybe find some sort of friendship with the others. It had been comforting at the start that everyone had something special about them so that being odd was considered normal. As she walked with the group following Quinn and Sabertooth away from the scene she tried to compose herself to not be sick or to cry. Zone had seemed a nice enough sort the one time she had been close enough to hear him muttering to himself. He had seemed the sort always pictured as the absent minded professor back when there were movies to actually watch. She couldn't help but think his death was yet another waste of brilliance like several of the other deaths since the woman called Julilee. Without realizing it, her thoughts returned to her step dad and how much he still disgusted her and that it was surely his fault she was on the run wondering who and where was the next threat and why folks couldn't find it in their hearts to allow themselves to care just a little.
