Hi! (new here btw)
Still dicking around with photoshop, and this past week been trying to get a grasp on making patterns. The pattern maker feature is alright, but I usually end up with something not really seamless.
Today I was reading into various online tuts, in particular this one:

So I'm making a totally random gradient overlay in difference mode, and follow the tutorial's instructions up until the paragraph before last. I come up with the following result:

But I still want a seamless pattern and this won't cut it, so I flipped it vertically and merged both layers together to produce this effect:

Since the figure is perfectly symmetrical, the resulting pattern is seamless, and what's more, you can almost make out the shape of fish when used as a tiled background.
