Hi! Veri's latest sig

I was asked to do a sig for someone else (crazy! This is a first for me btw) and between that and totally changing the look of my character, I thought it would be nice to make a new sig to warm up my (limited) photoshop skills and get my new look out there.

I'm mostly looking for input on how the toon looks, as everything else is not ready and to be honest I've completely changed my mind several times on what I want for the background. I just kind of put something in for a place holder for the moment.

I was going for dark and...thoughtful for the feel, and wanted a kicked up black and white look. Something clicked with the way she's standing, facing mostly away, and here we are :).

Alas, deciding to go with that particular angle means the hair really -has- to look good, since you end up seeing so much of it. This is my first attempt at doing anything extensive with hair (15 layers O_O) and any comments about that would be appreciated.

Also, be brutally honest here...is the veritas tattoo too much? Does it look stupid? Is the idea stupid or just the execution of it?

Anything else you wanna throw my way would be much appreciated. This sig still has a ways to go, but I figured that while I'm making up my mind on the background I can be working to get the toon just right :).

I think the back of her hair looks great. The front of her hair isn't laying on her shoulder like natural hair would. Its kinda sticking straight down. This is the technique that I use, which is pretty ghetto but helps me schlep thru hair to make it look halfway decent hehe.

Pick a small solid brush, 3 or 5px depending on the size of your sig. Up at the brush tab, select shape dynamics and then in the pull down menu pick FADE. Now it'll give you an idea of the length at the bottom box, I usually go long lik 80 or 90. Just test it out and see. That's how I get it to look wispy at the ends so you can go back in and soften the stroke with smudge at about 20 percent intensity.

Make the hair flow in the direction that you want and in your case, I'd do small thin strands and build up hair falling over her shoulder. Like let it sit on her shoulder. Its hard to explain, but try looking at your own hair...wait you have short hair, huh LOL - look at real life pictures or have a friend pose for you and lay her hair the way you want it for your toon.

I like the black and white though. I did 1 b&w and I was thrilled with it. I need to do more, gray scale is fun. What about a west karana background? Single tree or maybe halas? Also I like the tatt, I think its cute hehe.

I hope that helped, like I said I'm not the best at hair but that woudl be my suggestion =) Thanks for coming by Veri :hug

an update :)

Still some tweaking, but I think it's possible I may be close to being finished kind of sort of :\. Obviously I switched back to color; I really liked the way the screen shot I took for the background popped.

Thanks so much for all of your help :D. I don't have photoshop 7 so I kind of have to bastardize a bunch of different techniques that I pick up, but it eventually does what it's supposed to do. Not having the great brush engine that 7 has does kinda suck though :\.

I added img codes so everyone could see it without clicking, hope that was ok.

I LOVE IT! Girl that is beautiful, the hair came out perfect! I think you did an awesome job on that and yeah the background is perfect! :thumbsup
