Best online gallery webpage?

I have noticed several of y'all here use something called Coppermine for your online galleries. I was wondering.. is it free? Is it hard to set up and maintain? Would it be the best choice for setting up my website? And can I use frontpage? (that's all I know for webdesign =/ )

I don't have my own domain yet, so it needs to be fairly easy to change linkage and such if/when I do get one. Been toying with the idea for a while, not that I have much art time it seems like, but I want to get back into sig making.. that would be the drive I need to actually finish a project again. And while I lust after Vex's designs it's a) not in my budget and b) something I feel I should do myself, at least at first.

Any other options besides Coppermine that someone can suggest would be welcome as well! :)

Thru deezsites.com (shameless plug) he has a script that installs it in like 20 seconds and yes it is free. Its pretty easy to use, its a lot like phpbb forums. You do need your own webspace.

Coppermine is great, but it should be noted that modding it is rather difficult compared to phpbb, and the guy who made it has a...annoying..personality, so don't expect much help.
But besides that it's excellent and fairly easy to skin.

Also its tricky to enable .gifs with coppermine =/ SO i had to keep all my gifs separate.

yeah CPG is great except for that gif thing... as long as it's not something that's animated tho, you can just make a png for it cuz those do work with it. I just added an animated sig section to my forum for the few of those I do, and my dolls got their own lil site linked from my main one for that purpose.

I use Coppermine for EQ-Screenshots.com and it's a God-Send. Everytime I use it, I'm amazed by how much it can do.

You can get Gifs to work with Coppermine, but you have to install some script called ImageMagick. I have not tried it myself yet, but I did some research when I discovered Coppermine wouldn't support gifs and found out that people were making it work with this other script.

Oh yeah, forgot some things. Coppermine is pretty easy to install. I've installed it the 'easy' way using Installatron, which is a script install tool provided by my webhost, Deezsites. I've also installed Coppermine the 'hard' way, which really wasn't much more difficult.

Download the scrip from the CPG website,

http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/

Unzip it, upload all the files to your webspace in whatever foldername you want (gallery, images, artwork, coppermine, whatever). Then you'll have to change some of the CHMOD permissions of a few folders, which you can do via FTP, set up a new database on your space via your webhost, run install.php in your browser, and plug in your database username and password.

Just follow the tutorials on the CPG website. I found them to be pretty easy to understand.

I actually thought that modding was EASIER than on phpbb, but I've been modifying existing themes and not building from scratch. There are several dozen themes you can download, and many of them match existing phpbb themes. The part that stinks is that the 'demo' link to preview of all the themes is slower than dirt. It's sadly faster to download a theme sight unseen, upload it to your gallery, then preview it live to see if you like it.

If you find a theme that has the general structure and layout that you like, changing colors and adding/removing graphics is pretty easy. Roz found a theme that had good structure, but the colors were HORRID (poopy brown, green, and pink). I talked her out of scrapping the theme and helped her recolor the whole thing and add new images.

Temprah, if you need any help with installation or theme customization, let me know. I'd be glad to donate my time. :)

Thanks for the advice y'all!!! And deezsites.com.. is that Las's? Is having your own domain and stuff like that important? Would it be weird if I linked images from my old webspace to save bandwidth? I am completely clueless about these things, I did my site in like ummm 2002 I think and that's the last time I messed with html and the likes.

Right now I have my old dial up account at Ev1 that works good, 300mb storage and I have no idea how much xfer a month for $10. But I don't know anything about the database set up you mentioned Erin :S I'll give them a call and see what they say.

Thanks for the advice and putting up with my silly questions =)

I use the beginner plan. Even with 4 domains and TAC's forum database being big as hell, its more than adequate for me. I only use about 10gig or so bandwidth a month. Although with SA it is rising but not significantly.

Price $7
Storage 1GB
Bandwidth 30GB
MySQL Databases 50

The thing that sold me about deez is the scripts he has available thru installatron. You can install coppermine, phpbb forums, blogs, whatever in 20 seconds flat. It updates phpbb patches in seconds as well. I paid 80 for the year and thru godaddy.com my domain was 9 bucks. Good stuff.
