Should news channels show graphic katrina pictures?
You've seen the pictures on tv, the mutilated bodies found in the New Orleans dome. They were broadcast yesterday on CNN and the like. Is it necessary to see pictures of dead bodies to get the point across? Or is it sensationalism?

I'm inclined to believe they should, with a long enough notice that they'll be showing it. I've seen some that say, 'ohbythewaythesearegraphic' and BOOM. Yesterday CNN gave at least 10 seconds and said it 3 times. I think people need to see that yes there were heinous crimes happening and yes some people were severely fucked up. I dont know, I wouldnt want catherine to see it though.

I think it is almost necessary to show what happened. There was a great deal of crime commited in the aftermath, both in the SuperDome and in the gridlock of I-10. We as a country need to be aware of that crime and fancy words on a news program has never gotten the message accross before.
It is also a matter of reporting the truth. As one news reporter said, "We go to these disasters all over the world and report in graphic detail, showing pictures of gore and death. But we don't or can't in our own country. What does that say to them? That your loss is so much more exploitable than our own? That we have no respect for your country? Or does it say that we have such little faith in Americans that we shelter them from their own loss?"
I think we need to see what really happened, not cover it all up with fancy words and tales of heroism.
Ok stepping off the soapbox now. :drama

To be honest I don;t want to see it, I wouldn't watch it. *BUT* I am a huge believer in / supporter of freedom of the press to report all of the facts without bias so therefore it must be allowed to be shown..

They've showed dead on the news in more horrendous situations. Why should this be any different?

I think they should. Somes times you need to shock people into reality.
The reality is: FEMA done f'd up. Thats why Brown is stepping down 7:00am today.
There are attrocities occuring, and we need martial law to restore the city, and yet Bush sat on his thumbs for the first two days. Once the public saw the disaster on the news there was a public outcry as to governments response. This is an excellent example of poor leadership in action. Lets air the dirty laundry.
And finally. I need something to distract me from the gas prices.

I would say pretty much the same thing Mae said, except that instead of Catherine, I would use my own kids' names. :)

Whoever that news reporter was sure has their head on strait for sure. I believe in blunt turth no matter how harsh it may seem. I would rather have my feaaling hurt , be grossed out, pissed off w/e rather then being spoon feed sugar coated information. People in this world really need to see what is actually going on in their own country, their state, even their own neighborhood. If we turn a blind eye on the things we dont want to see or know indepth turth about, how on earth are we going to better ourselves as a nation? However, sadly for the majority of our population, pictures and strait forward facts don't seem to be helping or to be a proven more "powerful tool" then what we would hope it to be.
No, its not somthing I would want my children to view 24/7. Perhaps more discretion , prompt warning should be exercised more cautiously, specially during the day hours while our younger audiance is awake or w/e.
Now that I am futhering my education into criminal law and psych I may have grasped a different view on things now then I would have a couple years ago. /shrug
I have told my son, specially now that he getting older and wanting to go out more and more, about some of the wacked out poeple in the world not to scare him but to get my point across, and make him understand why i want to know where he is going, the house number and phone, and let him how unsafe it really is out there now days. Maybe I was harsh in telling him about a case where a child his age was kidnapped, rapped had his pp cut off, stabbed to death and thrown in a ditch,.. but face it, Shit like this is what happens no matter how hard anyone tries to deny it. and look away from it, Whats wrose is it happens ,.... every day =/
