Some male animals get really stinky. When I was a preteen, we raised goats. My favorite baby boy goat got to keep all his attachments. Damn was he smelly.
Mouse may be managable in stench, good luck. Maybe you can get him a tiny blowup doll mouse? ;)
Rodent Care
We have a mouse who is roughly seven months old. He's a good little mouse and likes to be held and played with.
I clean his cage every three days or so to cut down on the smell, though he isn't nearly as stinky as a hamster or gerbil. However in the last couple of weeks, I will clean his cage and the next day it smells like I haven't cleaned him in a week.
Also when I take him out of his little floor ball, that thing smells so bad I can barely pick it up to clean it.
Could there be something wrong with him or is he just aging?
BTW: He's eating well, is still sociable, and plays normally.

Go get a cage bedding called Close + Comfy
Its made of corn husks + a deorderant. With 2 female rats I only have to change the bedding about 1/month. The stuff is truly awesome. Should work really well with the mouse. Also unlike pine or paper it doesn't retain the moisture, so no worries about nail infections in the rodents.
As for the ball, well, thats your problem. No idea how to solve it, since I can let my rats out and they will come back when called.

get ferrets... I got two a few months ago and they're great... they have a scent, but it's not that noticable when they're fixed.. and most of the ferrets for sale have been fixed.
I let my guys out of their cage regularly.. they tend to poop where they shouldn't, but I've been using puppy pads to take care of that..
they sleep about 16 hours a day but the rest of the time they're playful and rather devious.

Rainee wants to get some ferrets. Personally, I feel that since we have a dog, a cat, 2 mississippi map turtles, 2 green plumed basilisks and one hypo corn snake, we are currently capped on our pet limit.
They are pretty cool though, but I wouldnt have them while still having the dog and cat. The cat is 19 though...but the dog is only 9 ;)

my cat gets along with them, mostly... the ferrets are young, so they still think its funny to run up to the cat, bite her tail, get whacked, then run away.. they also like to play whack-a-ferret under the TV stand.. the cat will sit there for a long time just trying to smack them when they stick their noses out.. it's funny..
..and chicks love them.

The only way to really control your boy's odor other than constant cage cleaning is to get him neutered. If you take him to a vet that is used to working with exotic, it should run about 25-40 bucks or so. Which is kind of expensive for a rat, but may be more worthwhile to pay that than clean and clean and clean the cage.
The odor you smell is scent marking and the level is decreased when the male is castrated because the hormone levels are decreased.

My Fiance and I were playing with our rats today, and I was having a beer. Figuring it was the holidays I allowed my rat (Stitch) to have some. Well apparently a cap full was enough for her, so she wandered around for like 2 minutes, climbed from the couch to the table, where the beer finally set in, and then proceeded to fall off the table. Stunned and confused she ran under the chair where it took me about 5 minutes to get her to come out. At which point, she wanted more beer.
And that is why she is my rat. My fiance's rat drank in moderation. Go figured.
