Scan/Colour Questions
I have some pen art I've been wanting to digitize and colour or have coloured but everytime I have ever scanned anything it looks like ass, blemished from page imperfections, missing soft lines and other things that make scanning a pita. Does anyone have any suggestions for correcting this? Different pen size, ink type, paper type? Better scanner(using cheap pos which I know is part of my problem)? Is tracing from a wacom more effective?
As for colouring I suck with the photoshop, but im thinking with thick solid lines I can get some large areas filled fast and smudge in shadow and maybe have something halfway decent in the end. Can anyone point me to some online references for colouring pen art?

I find that when something is unscannable due to light lines, etc. It means i did not make my lineart dark enough to seperate it from the page, blemishes, etc. If it is shading then it means that I did not push my darks and lights the way I should be. Might also help for us to see what was scanned to give a little more feedback on how to fix it.

Usually I go back and manually erase blemishes and fidde with the level or curves. However, Tryn has a good suggestion, if you know that it is going to be scanned and it scans light then darken everything up. I know my scanner is like that too where really light lines are patchy.

The other thing to remember is that once it's digitized you can pretty much correct anything with Photoshop as long as the main lines are dark enough. To get rid of blemishes from the paper, I make a plain white layer underneath the lineart, then set the lineart layer blending mode to Multiply, then take the eraser brush and erase any blemishes (or paint over them in white whichever you prefer). Then I merge the layers(don't flatten the image that will remove the blending mode, but if you merg layers it doesn't) and you've got a nice clean white background to work with.

I don't really deal with freehand very much, but isn't there some trick about using a special blue pencil to sketch with and then a red one to go over the lines you want to keep? Then the scanner only picks up the red?
Or do I have those colors reversed?
