Poser 5 question

I've been playing with Poser 5 since November of last year, and every time I think I'm going to try something I end up getting so frustrated I just quit. This has got to be the least user friendly program I've ever seen. But I digress...

My comp has 504MB Ram...is that just way too little? The poser program takes forever to load, and then anytime I try to do anything, again...like walking through frozen molasses.
I don't have a lot of other things running, that I'm aware of, in the background, or even open when I'm in Poser... Just curious to know if this is par, or if I can do something to speed it up a little?

I use 1 gig and I've noticed damn near everything makes that the minimum. I'd suggest making sure your settings are toned down while doing practice renders, turn off shadows, that type of thing till youre ready for a final render. I'd suggest rebooting and closing everything down that's not necessary when playing with poser too.

Upgrading to poser6 and getting the service pack they just put out helps A LOT with the memory leaks.

It is a major system hog. There is no getting around the taking forever to load bit that I know of. It also takes forever to switch from say your Downloads directory and your Poser Directory. No realy help here...other than yes more RAM would be nice. I am more partial to P6 than P5..seems to run faster for me.

bah P5 sucked IMO. I kept using 4's pro pack over it until I got 6. I've found that the memory thing is a huge issue. MOre is always better, but you shouyld be able to scoot by with your settings turned down like Roz suggested. I've got 1 gig o' ram too and it lags and drags bad for me (it just closes constantly with no reason the minute I load my first figure after the damn patch *fume* but I digress..)

Ok...that's good to know, I guess. I got 5 for free, and don't want to pay for 6 unless I figure out how to work 5 well enough. I have been thinking about uping my ram though so I'll probably go ahead with that.

I'll go through and see if I can shut off those parts recommended too.

Thanks guys.

*nod* What they said I'm sitting on about 2g now and still drags for me. P6 seems allot faster loading and likewise but then again I dont have all my crap installed into it yet either =/ Its just a system hog as MW stated so you're not alone *comforts*

I know a lot of us use separate computers to render, which is what I want to do with Catherine's computer lol

actually there is! If all your computers are network you can set them up for resource sharing...we have two pc's and I suck the juice out of the other one to render!

If you want to talk about horrible render times and such...try Bryce and worse get it to do an animation. I have left it on rendering for a full day once for a short animation.

Back when I first started 3D I was making up in Poser then importing and rendering in Bryce.. (before Daz Studio so it was a major PITA) took me over 36 hours once to do a scene, was one person, a couple props and a waterfall & lake behind em. So while the quality of the renders can be much better and the backgrounds look more realistic for outdoors stuff I just use Poser and deal, a 30-40 minute render is worth the loss in quality IMO.

28 hrs in Vue D'Esprit :P Vue has some kind of add on that will let you use another computer to assist in rendering but and I wasnt going to pay extra for that. I have a pentium 4 3.2 ghz with 1 gig.

poser is a hog. I hate most of their fancier rendering tools. atmosphere.. depth .. whatever that was. ugh. and for what? blurry pictures.

Yeah the short animation was 36 hours or so. I don't remember how long the long one was. You can import poser to bryce but bryce objects don't import to poser except in very rare cases. I believe no boolean objects are allowed.

I remember you working on the pieces for that customer, those were awesome to watch the WIP's.
