Possibilities:
Fragmented,
didn't load drivers quite correctly,
it's dying.
Fixes:
Defrag
disconnect, power off, reboot, power drive on, reconnect
pray?
External Hard Drives
Why would it start processing real slow? Before I left to kc for a week, it worked fine. Now it takes FOREVER to process. I still see the data there, i just can't get anything to load quickly.
Send help.

buy a new one?
check to make sure your USB host controller is ok. Driver. Windows also likes update itself when your not paying attention. Try updating your USB driver as well, incase Microsoft broke it. USB 2.0 and Microsoft haven't been doing to well as of late. See the USB 2.0 core duo problem.

How do you chkdsk because now its asking I do that. I can still see and access the data on my hard drive though. Is it the external thing that's failing or the drive itself?

go to start
Press Run
type in chkdsk
Voila.
The drive could be dying. As pros said you need to get the latest version of your computers chipet usb drivers.
Post the model and number or the number of the motherboad and I will get the link to you for what you need. This infor could be on dells site under support as well if you have a dell.

Ok it ran the disk check and it helped A LOT. I can at least use the drive and it's not slow as hell now. I still get the I/O errors, which I guess are input/output errors. So is it the drive or the external thingy its sitting in that's crapping out?

If it's I/O errors, then it is very likely the external thingy it's sitting in.

Well I ran one and it will only do a diag on my C drive, it wont look at my ext. After I did the check disk and the defrag, it's actually working fine. I backed everything up though, just in case. I'll download and try another program later tonight to see if it'll pick up the external.

It seems that the hard drive in the actual enclosure is working well, if it turns out to be the enclosure thats the problem, head down to your local CompUSA/Bestbuy/Fries and buy a new enclosure. Do a harddrive transplant (Its really just an ide interface and a power cable), and you will be set to go. Total cost to you should not be more then $30-40 US. But I don't know what that will translate into baby seal pelts. I assume thats what you use in alaska.

We stop using pelts. They started using the heads of snooty white boys who work at computer stores. :stab

I'm beginning to think that maybe I had a virus or something. After defragging twice, doing the chkdisk thing, all I had to do was reinstall poser onto my main drive since I was having this weird python error and viola...she's gold.
Weird. But thank you guys! I always appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my dumb questions =)

Great! Now send me a baby seal, since they are no longer in circulation in Alaska. I'll keep it with my coin collection. Please pack a list of stuff to feed it.
