Awww...have you tried heat? A rx of Aquafair usually works great for me, for the pain of an earache anyway, but heat sometimes helps.
Earaches suck though...and I really feel for you.
Head hurts so bad >.<
Went to dr this morning to fix a very congested, clogged, and painfully unhearing right ear.
Apparently it was majorly blocked with wax.
So it got flushed.
And man, it HURT.
I've had this done a few other times but this had to be the worst.
And all day the right side of my head has hurt - though it did stop briefly for lunch - lucky me - but now I can't sleep because it hurts so much. My cheek from just below and behind my eye hurts all the way to my ear, and from my ear down my neck below my jaw. I hate the way the nose ear and throat are all interconnected. When I breathe I can hear whistling in my ear. And it hurts.
Have I mentioned it hurts?

The instructions for using Q-tips explicitly state "do not insert q-tip into ear canal, for external use only." You're not supposed to put them in.
Of course, I do anyway, just a little. It's kind of embarassing to go to a store or something and have someone staring at your ear, then you go outside, brush your finger against it, and have an ear booger stuck to your finger.
The human ear is supposed to automatically push out foreign objects and clumped wax by thousands of cillia (I think that's right). Little hairs inside that act like vaccuum brushes and move everything out.
In any case, I have a monaural headset at work which I always use on my right ear. And I only get this problem - that is, a severe blockage in my ear affecting my ability to hear - towards the end of winter. I'm thinking the two are related. In fact, last year, I got this in January, when we in Jersey got a lot of snow; this year I didn't get it til it started getting really cold - and humidically dry - again here at the end of February. The doctor isn't quite sure my hypothesis regarding the cause is correct, but he did say it has merit.
And yes, Roz, it hurts like a mofo. The doctor takes this huge silver plunger - bigger than a standard turkey baster - fills it with lukewarm water, stuffs it into the entrance of your ear, and squeezes the trigger, pushing a jet of water into your ear. This jet bounces off your eardrum and back out, loosening wax on the way. It is then scooped out with a tiny metal loop, if needed.
I won't gross you out with how much he removed.
Anyway, follow this link for the writeup on InteliHealth.
This is the seventh time I've had to have this done, but the first time the pain persisted all day long. I took four 500mg tylenol, two 600mg ibuprofen, and eventually a Tylenol3 before I could get to sleep, it hurt so much.

I'm the same way. Very little wax, and q-tips after every shower. My husband and youngest daughter have small ear canals and wax builds up and can't work it's way out. About once every three months for hubby and once every six months for daugher, I have to put Debrox drops in their ears and then flush gently with warm water with a bulb syring.
My daughter's pediatritcian taught me how to do this with my kiddo so it's possible to do it at home. My oldest daughter doesn't have this problem, so I have her use those safety q-tips after each bath.
Hubby and daughter can't use q-tips because it just makes the compaction of wax worse.

I feel your pain man, as a kid I had 6 ear surgeries and almost constant earaches.. so bad i would literly cry until I fainted / lost conscienceness.. as it is right now I'm 95%(95 decibel loss on a 110 scale) deaf in my left ear and i only have about 40% hearing in my right ear..
The only thing that can come close to ear pain is a toothache.. it sucks..
I also wear a Monaural headset all day, but I don't get the earwax problem.. I use swabs about 1 or twice a week.. but since I'm finally getting my hearing aids this week (Yay me! a major goal finally realized) i'll probably be cleaning my ears far more often.. since I have a holes in my eardrums The solution cannot be used with me, the doctor has to use suction which is less effective and sounds kinda like laying down on a running vaccume cleaner...
another trick you can do to remove the pain of an earache.. it sounds stupid.. but it works.. boil an onion until it starts to fall apart, then let it cool enough to handle it, you still want it warm.. get the core of the onion (shaped like a root bulb kinda) and shake off the excess moisture and put the tip of the wide section in your ear and lay down.. it will take about 5-10 minutes but the pain will ease.. don't ask me how but it works..

it does work, seriously! His Mom did that for me several years ago when I had an ear ache so bad I wanted to beat myself, literally, to have a different pain to focus on. For me it was a buikd up of sinus pressure and such, the warmth and all of the onion finally helped my ear pop (LOUDLY!) and release the pressure. Not to mention it's like putting a small heating pad into your ear, it just warms and relaxes those tiny bits around there.
