Holiday Decoration Limits

My sister's birthday is March 15th. One of the things she wanted was to have all the Christmas decorations still up by then.

Then I read this.

Aurora Fights Untimely Holiday Lights

Decorations Still Up? You May Be Breaking The Law

AURORA, Ill. -- It's something most of us see every year -- neighbors who refuse to take down their holiday lights. After receiving numerous complaints, a new city ordinance in Aurora now makes it illegal."Depending on the type, it trashes up the neighborhood," Aurora resident Laura Gartman said. The ordinance was approved Tuesday night and went into effect Wednesday. It applies to holiday lights and decorations outside Aurora homes. The new ordinance allows homeowners to display decorations 60 days prior to a holiday and requires them to be dismantled within 60 days after the holiday. Fines begin at $50 after a written warning. While two aldermen voted against the measure, nine agree it was necessary."The goal is really the upkeep of the neighborhood and the appearance of our neighbors' houses," Alderman Abby Schuler said. "We care about property values."The new ordinance applies to all holidays. So the homeowners that "]NBC5's Jennifer Mitchel found who still have their Halloween decorations up -- are breaking the law.But some argue that city officials should spend their time on more important causes."I think we've got a lot more serious problems in Aurora, with gangs and things like that, than you have to worry about somebody with lights on," resident Bob Jungels said.Residents bothered by the problem are encouraged to contact the city. Inspectors will be sent out to the home in question. Officials hope residents will hear about the new law and comply on their own.Aurora officials said the ordinance is modeled after similar laws in Northbrook, Mount Prospect, Elgin and LaGrange. Religious icons are not included in the Aurora ordinance. Copyright 2006 by "]NBC5.com. All rights reserved. it's a deed restriction in my neighborhood to have the lights up after I think like January 15th.. I know it's not even 30 days.

Yes, our HOA says all Xmas decorations must all be taken down by the 15th of January as well. Considering most decorations go up the week of Thanksgiving, I'm always ready to see them come down in January some time.

But then we have a lot of people who decorate for Easter...then the 4th of July...then Halloween...all with lights and buku decorations too...so really they just change the colors mainly. But its a nice change.

Well, we live on a military base, but since it is in Alaska it is somewhat different here. The decorations can go up starting in November, as in Nov 1st, and they don't have to be down, well till now. Basically there is this festival that occurs in the Anchorage area, Fur Rondy, in which it is quite accepted that decorations can stay up from/for Christmas.

And since it gets dark around 3:45 in December, 4-4:30ish in January and 4:30-5:15ish in Feb it is all good to have the lights up. But now it is getting dark around 6:30-7ish.
