Oblivion - LARGE IMAGES

Today I was talking roz about Oblivion. She had never heard of it. This is completely fucking inexcusable, because it is going to be the best game of all time.

Some background: A few years ago, Bethesda released a hugely popular game called Morrowind, the 3rd game in The Elder Scrolls series. Morrowind had many flaws with both the engine and general game design, yet it despite these flaws, it is regarded by almost everyone that has played it (including myself) as one of the best single player RPG's of all time. The world that you could freely explore was the most expansive and open-ended that has ever existed (until tomorrow, that is). You could do literally whatever you wanted in the game. I played the game for over a year and had over a dozen characters before I ever completed the mainquest, because the main world is mind-bogglingly huge and you can do whatever you want in it. There are thousands and thousands of NPC's, and over 500 quests in the original storyline, as well as hundreds of dungeons and ruins and such to explore. There were guilds and factions and great houses to join and gain ranks in. Anything and everything. Character creation was skill-based and completely open-ended. You could make any kind of character with any kind of ability that you wanted. On top of that, the game was released to be easily modable, and thousands of mods have been created to enhance graphics, add quests, houses, npc's, and other functionality. Some teams of fans have even released their own expansions: entire continents added dozens of hours of gameplay.

That was Morrowind. Oblivion comes out tomorrow, and everyone who has seen it says that it blows Morrowind away. I feel that it is my duty to make EVERYONE try it, for their own personal enrichment.

i am assuming this is a first person game like Morrowwind? (I loved it btw but didn't play much since I wanna be able to do stuff with the hubby =/ )

Oh! Now that sounds intriguing to me...since I don't play any of the online games now (playing with others intimidates me :S)
So...is it along the lines of Sims?

I'm half tempted to try this. I haven't played an engaging 1-player RPG since Fallout.

Wizardry 8 was a nice diversion, but the battle system was clunky and horrible. I hope they do battle better in this.

I got my copy on order. Gonna put my newly built PC through its paces with this baby.

The only similarity that it has with the Sims is that the NPC's have active and detailed lives that they carry on living regardless of whether or not your character is present. The world is filled with thousands of NPC's who all have schedules and motivations that they carry out. Their individual moods and feelings towards other NPC's are certainly not going to be as complex as the Sims is, but the level will be great enough that it will be as if you're dropped into a living, breathing, truly populated world.

It can be either first or third depending on your preference, just like Morrowind was.

Or more if you opt for the collector's edition.

Which I often do.

i went shoe shopping last night so naturally X went next door to game stop. They had it, and we will probably be getting it soon. $50 is a little much to swallow, especially when I'm not 100% sure our systems will even run it good. But man I want it just to take screenshots if nothing else hehe.

I've never played any of these elder scrolls games, but I'm downloading this one to try it out just because it's so hyped up.

I'm betting I hate it.

I hated the last one. I mean really hated it. I guess at that time I was so indoctrinated to the single path progression in RPGs that I hated it.

I loaded this up, and it might be awhile before I really progress with it. I screw around half the time rather than follow any sort of quest. I pick locks, steal shit, kill people, then get killed by the magically appearing guards. (I hate that, how in the hell does someone know that I've killed some dude in his house?)

I laughed my ass off when I plunked about 75 arrows into one guard and it just pissed him off. I laughed more when I then stole his horse. Then I found that I alt/tabbing wasn't a good idea.

Overall I'm pretty enamored with the idea of the game right now. Beautiful graphics, pretty easy interface, minor annoyances not really worth mentioning.

I didn't like Morrowwind at all really. I was able to play it for a couple of days before I grew bored and found it "pointless" - though it was very innovative and huge - it was groundbreaking, but just not fun for me.

Some friends are talking Oblivion up bigtime so I'll check it out - but on their computers first

well we bought it last night... since it was only sale, we had to, you know? It won't run on X's PC but does on mine on lowest settings with only a little mouse jerky-ness (guess my vid card's a lil better since his system is better than mine overall) It is fun!! I only messed around a little but to see how it would run, I'm still in the "tutorial". Only thing I don;t like is the keyboard set up, I'm an arrowkey person so I'll see if that's customizable.

I'm the same way as well and that was the first thing that I did. I know that you can also assign hotkey functions to the number keys for items, which makes it easier than using the tab function to select potions/etc.

But I also didn't like Morrowind. I bought it, installed it and thought "Meh". But so far this seems to have grabbed me a bit and I find that I look forward to playing it.

Yeah he hasn't played wow really since he bought it and he's played that damn near every day for quite a while.
