Relationships in books

I was thinking today about the sorts of relationships I enjoy writing about and eventually came around to the relationships I enjoy –reading- about. Then I got curious about what dynamic duos (or trios, or …four o’s…) other people can’t seem to get enough of. So…share!

I’ll probably think of more, but here’s what came to me off the top of my head.

Ender, Valentine and Peter – I love this often complicated, more often messy sibling trio. I think I –most- enjoy Ender and Valentine in the Speaker books but I couldn’t leave Peter out – even when he’s all by his lonesome in the Shadow books, the sibling relationships live on.

Human and The Hive Queen – Thinking of Ender and Valentine in the Speaker books led me to this pair. Their dialogues are exquisitely beautiful and are one of the reasons I love the Speaker books so well. It is definitely one of my favorite friendships, moreso because we humble humans somehow manage to get little glimpses of what their deeply intimate communication is like.

Paul and Norman McLean – There’s just nothing quite like brotherly love. I’m a sucker for it *grins*. And ‘A River Runs Through It’ is a lovely movie too.

The Hound and Sansa – There is a lot of hate for Sansa, but I think her interactions with The Hound are some of the most haunting in the Song of Ice and Fire books.

Jamie and Cersei – Another from the Song of Ice and Fire books. A very…complicated sibling relationship that is nonetheless disturbingly engrossing.

Ender and Ali – For one fleeting moment, they were brothers! Yes, I am a sap, and I am as much a sucker for imagined brotherhood as the real thing.

Harry and Snape – Okay, so it’s a stretch to call this a relationship. It still fascinates me :). I do also like the trio’s close friendship but the conflict is more interesting to me.

Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy – So maybe I don’t remember Mr. Darcy’s first name! Sue me! I still adored these two together bunches :D.

Anita and Nathanial - I especially like Nathanial now that he's becoming less submissive, but I love him as Anita's partner.

Beatrice and Benedick - I love their fiestyness, and refusal to admit their feelings.

Lizzie and Mr. Darcy - *sigh*
