so.. advice?

Man trying to find a new job while working SUCKS. I only call people back when I go to lunch (miss people a lot that way) or after 5 (am I the only one who works late anymore?). Why won't people do everything via email? argh! Then I have to keep coming up with reasons to take off early or come in late, only so many reasons to go to the doctors. I've just been taking vacation for most interview days.. but even with 3 weeks worth at my disposal it's taking a toll. Since I wear jeans and tennis shoes to work I have to go home and change before / after every one, another time drag. (Can't wear skirts or dresses to work since I am in a plant.. not to mention people would suspect something)

Anyone have suggestions of a better way to do this?!

Just bring your clothes with you, that's what I've done. I applied for my last 2 jobs online though but that face to face interview is crucial. I missed out on a job because I was out of state visiting my parents (medical emergency) and they just couldn't wait, although they did sympathize. I flat out asked if I could do an over the phone interview but nope, i guess they wanted to see if I was freakishly large or something.

Don't you have a cell phone or is it just bad range. Take up smoking so you can go outside and fake a smoke and call people then? lol

Yeah well I *AM* a very big girl (hopefully not freakish but who knows), another strike against me =X I do use my cell phone, at lunch. I have NO privacy at my desk, ever. And the bathroom shares a paper thin wall with my boss's office so that's out. We're a tobacco free facility and smoke breaks aren't allowed for employees since you have to drive out of the plant and completely off our site (can't even stand at the road) I guess I should just bring my stuff with me, as long as there's a restaurant or someplace I can change along the way. I usually don't bother to do anything with my hair when I come to work other than wear a headband so I would have to style it on the go.. I could get one of those neat portable cordless curling iron thingies =D

Another problem I've found is I am SERIOUSLY underpaid now (hence looking for a new job). To get to the BOTTOM of the range for someone with my experience I need a 50% raise. I started here with 3 years experience and now I'll have 10 next month. With only 2% annual increases I haven't come close to keeping up... and I have had agencies tell me that a lot of companies probably won't want to give me such a significant bump. (Especially since my job title here does NOT match my level of responsibility.) But if I am leaving 3 weeks vacation and a job I can coast through 50% of the time.. I better get at least that much more!

I'm bitchy and annoyed, sorry if I am ranting.

Well I meant the large part as a joke, because if they're not hiring you because of that, then you could live off the interest from the millions you get from the discrimination law suit you could win lol.

The one thing I've noticed is you always get more money going to a new company then getting promoted within. Just how it works. Ask for just a little bit more than what you want, you can always negotiate down to what you'll settle for, but don't ever start with that amount. At least I wouldn't. I got my job on my terms because I waited, but i hear you about getting paid shit for what you do. =/

Keep plugging away. It took my brother 10 years working for the VA to get into the IRS, but then he had a misdemeanor hanging over his head. Literally 10 years wasted, so it's good you're not giving up!
