It doesn't say MMORPGs, it says "online gaming."
Sims Online, in its heyday, had a higher female population than male. Similarly, I understand Second Life is also rather tilted to a female balance.
Further, I know quite a few women who play poker or other strategy-like games online. Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, etc.
The death of manginas?

So much for the idea that 90% of females in MMORPG's are male...

Yeah, my mom and her friends play all the yahoo puzzle games.
There's no F-ing way that women outnumber men in MMO's.

This is most likely true. However I ment the title more as a conversation piece to point out the rising number of women in on line gaming, including RPG's.

You say this like it's a bad thing. It seems to me that more and more women I know who's husbands are gamers, and they are not, are getting into gaming as well, more to spend time with the hubby/boyfriend/SO than anything else, and finding they enjoy it as well.
I also know several single women who got into gaming to pass the time and find themselves hooked. More women means a broader base of RL women to flirt with, and less of a chance that it's a big burly teamster behind the keyboard of that hot nightelf hunter.

Don't take it as a bad thing, it was not intended to be. I find most of my friends get into gaming for the same reason I did. Sitting around the house with nothing to do, and there is nothing worth watching on TV. We found that it was a lot more fun to play with each other one line then watch a rerun of law and order with tons of TV commercials. From there on we were gamers. I would not be suprised if this happens to anyone, regardless of sex.

In all honesty, I was lured in via an ex-boyfriend, but I stayed mostly because of Mileron ;)...until I actually became hooked...now I'm a goner. Though, by most of the stats I've read, I'm still a 'casual' player.
As for what I play, WOW is the only online game I've ever played. I never had the interest to play any of the card games, nor, even when I was a big Sim's player was I ever interested in playing online. However, even playing WOW online, I'm not a big 'group' player, and tend to go it alone. Occasionally, when Mileron is feeling benevolent he'll lead me through a tough quest, and even rarer someone will just come up to me and ask me to help them with a quest, which I do, and enjoy. But get me in a huge crowd of players and I just get too intimidated :P
* Though older females make-up the largest percentage of casual gamers,
active gamer teens and young adults also comprise a considerable portion
of this market, with more than half playing casual games an hour or more
a week.

Meh, I was a gamer before the RP's started being online. My first game was a D&D game when I was 18. I felt sorry for those in our college group who had a tolerant partner until they got married and then suddenly "no more of that silliness for you!"
It was a female friend of mine from high school that got me and my ex boyfriend playing eq1. We already played other online strategy games and had just gotten bored with playing another character in Diablo. I must have picked the EverQuest box up three or four times and read the back before deciding to do something else.
My friend wisely suggested making a name that you didn't mind being shortened to three or four letters because she swore that it would be. I listened and picked Maewyn even before I had the game.

No one told me to do this, and so my first character in EQ was called Samnie, not a big deal if you don't mind being called Sam, but my second character was called Braitha...
Lucky for me my guild was semi-roleplay so I was never called Bra by them, but that didn't stop pug people from doing it.

A few days ago I stumbled across something called "World of Whorecraft", which is basically just WoW themed porn. Today, I learned that the actress in this video is actually a WoW player, and that she plays on Mal'Ganis (my server). :o

Daphinue = Daph
Celiwyne = Celi
It's just way easier to type, plus it adds a bit of familiarity, just like in rl.

I started with Cali and have stuck with it for, um, 8 or more years. All my chars (aside from the backwards named ones) are Calisomething. In DDO i did try a new name Caohmie which is pronounced Kay Ohm and while its cool I just dont feel the connection to the character. I will keep my Calimaryn, calimayrn, Calimay, Calimryn and Nyramilac's thank you.
