Mac or PC

Ok, I know I know...but my boss is buying me a new machine. He offered to get me one of the new 20+ inch Imacs for me to do my work on...however he will get me whatever I want. I can get a power book pro 17" if I want it, or a dell notebook or whatever.

Does anyone know if there is any significant differences between todays pc's and macs, besides the 1.9 trillion virus' out there for a pc vs hardly any for mac? Mac now uses the intel duo core processors just like pc's so I'm trying to find any benefit to switching to Mac. I have to re-learn mac if I get one, and everyone else at work is using pc.

Would I have to buy MS office for Mac so I can view all of the word doc's and excel spreadsheets etc, or is there built in software that can read all of that?

I want a mac for certain reasons, and i want a pc for other reasons.

Whatever I get will be an upgrade to what I'm using at home and work, so I need it mobile (notebook).

Anyone that visits these boards that's educated in this subject, please help shed some light on the subject. I would appreciate it greatly!!

Yes, you would need to buy Office for Mac. Or you could get StarOffice (I think it's staroffice... the free open-source version of Office for Mac)

The bonus of Intel-based Macs is that you can install Windows in a dual-boot setup, and have Windows programs in Windows, and Mac programs on the Mac side.

Gee for the resident Mac Guru you didn't give him much information. Damn man, be more specific!

Vex is more of a guru regarding Macs right now than I am...
I haven't had a new mac since 2000 and haven't used the OS since 10.2.4 - late 03.

I'm learning as I go, too.

I have only PCs, but I would like to get a Mac. Everything I have is for PC. Having a duel boot mac would be very nice.

I have a PC desktop and an intel macbrook pro (17") w/ 1gig of ram.
I dont know what kind of work you do, but for designing websites and stuff, macs are fantastic. Built-in webserver is pretty handy if thats the way you do things.

There's also lots of nice mac-only programs out there for development.

But being a regular user of both, I would say go with what feels comfortable. I will always be a windows user because its what i was pretty much born on, and i know tons of lil windows secrets.

I'm still learning the mac but its definitely comfortable for me. Photoshop CS2 runs wonderfully on it.

But bottom line, if you feel uncomfortable on a mac or want to use your laptop for gaming too ( and you play something other than wow ) then get a PC.

wow runs good on mine too :)
