Any NoCal people here?

Fozz and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this May and we'd like to take a trip to see the redwoods. Any advice on where to stay (Fozz would rather do the Redwood State Park than Yosemite but I think we could both be swayed either way at this point), how to get a good price on flights, etc...we live in Columbia, halfway between Baltimore and DC, so this would be quite a leap for us :X.

If you decide to see the redwoods, I can give you names of places in Crescent City, which is right on the coast, and have some knowledge of what's there. Can't offer any info on Yosemite, cause even though I've lived in CA all my life, I've never been there :S.

As for flights? I almost always go through Orbitz.com. Hotels.com is also a nice site, and what we used when we planned a short vacation last year.

Shay that would be lovely if you could suggest some places. We're definitely leaning more toward Redwood State Park. We'd fly out to San Fran and then take a little plane to Eureka (*grins* not the one we mentioned in Mafia), and rent a car from there.

We've been looking at various bed and breakfast and cabin options - so far this is our first choice:

but it would be better, we think, if we had a recommendations for something as otherwise you really never know until you get there whether or not you're staying in a total dive *grins*.

Fozz wants to see some trees and seems to care about having a nice view in his room. I also want to see some huge trees, hike, take pictures, have long romantical walks on the beach and such (no gagging noises!) and generally enjoy some peace and quiet.

Also, any food places we should try?

I’ve never stayed in Trinidad, but I have heard of that B&B, and it’s supposed to be really nice, as well as perfect if you want to be close to the ocean.

Another B&B I’ve heard is very nice is further north: http://www.castleislandgetaway.com/
That’s in Crescent City, which is about 26 miles south of the Oregon border, if you’re planning on going that far north.

Some places of interest in that area: Ferndale -- http://www.victorianferndale.org/chamber/ -- the tv version of ‘Salem’s Lot was filmed there…the cemetery is a nice visit (ok -- I’m weird, but I like old cemeteries) and there are a lot of cool Victorian houses. The also have a very nice B&B there: http://www.gingerbread-mansion.com/ This isn’t on the beach though.

As for hiking…Fern Canyon is incredible…http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/FernCanyon_0000.asp

Big trees? Avenue of the Giants is awesome: http://www.terragalleria.com/california/california.avenue-giants.html

In Klamath, between Eureka and Crescent City, is the Trees of Mystery : http://www.treesofmystery.net/ They’re commercial, but they are interesting, though by the time you get there, you may be sick to death of trees lol.

I’ll try to remember more places, and will post them if you want. I love the beauty of that part of California, but it’s a better place to visit than it is to live…unless you don’t need a job lol.

This is very helpful, seriously. We kinda started with 'gee, I've always wanted to see the redwoods' and went from there so we're kind of clueless :X. Crescent City looks like a good option that we probably wouldn't have considered otherwise just because it's further North. I'll have to twist Fozz's arm to visit the cemetery too :D.

I live in Reno, Nv about 30 minutes give or take from California. We went to Yosimite last summer to see the redwoods and all I have to say is.... O My God! We didn't get to spend as much time as we would have liked. But the redwoods were amazing! They have a really cool tour you can take and walking trails all around that part of the park. Also there are tons of other things to see in there as well. I would definately recomend visiting to anyone.

Should be some blue rocks on the beach up in that area called blue schist. Vulash wants. Also you can get rainbow obsidian in that area as well :P I don't know much about the hotels though. I know a guy from there I'll ask around.

We're definitely leaning more toward Crescent City now...there's a hostel up that way that we thought we'd crash in for a night and then go somewhere froofy.

No clue on hostels...didn't even realize there was one in CC lol.

Prepare for cold, rain, foggy weather, and you should do fine :)
