Coolest Things - Telescopes

So lately I've been feeling a hankerin' for seeing things far away...

And yesterday decided to drag out the telescope my brother bought a few years ago. Except I couldn't find but one lens. Oops.

So I take it outside and try to set it up on the hood of one of the cars so I can see this planet that's been hanging in the western sky around 9pm that I just can't identify.

Tonight I actually found some of the lenses (but not the manual) and got it outside again and was actually able to resolve said planet quite well. Couldn't identify it til I came in and looked it up (11pm)

but before that, I decided to peek at our nearest neighbor, El Luna. Very damned bright, looking at it through a telescope.

Called my brother outside. He goes apeshit when he sees it and says "look look look"

And we see a satellite crossing the plane of the moon :D

I tried to take a couple pictures of the moon but the cheapy digital cameras looking through cheapy telescope ends up crappy...

But it was really cool to see it so "up close."

That is so cool, that you could see something so few of us ever get the chance to. I know how excited I get when I see shooting stars...seeing that satellite would have been incredible.

PS = Blue moon tonight - won't be another one till New Years Eve 2009 :)

Oh oh oh.

Using starrynight via space.com I discovered that planet is Venus.

I don't remember ever seeing it so bright so late in the evening.
