Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Saw this last night.
I thought the story was really good, the battle choreography was excellent. The music often set a nice tone but only one thing really bothered me...
WTF was up with all the "ninja flying" shit?

theyre not ninjas!
li mu bai (chow yun fat) is a monk from the wudang temple. he is a taoist, and a practitioner of tai chi. yes, that slow moving stuff you see old people doing in the park is a real martial art and considered by many to be the... well, i guess everyone says theirs is the best. jiao long's (ziyi zhang) maid, jade fox (scary old lady), has stolen a secret tai chi training manual. thats what the girl uses to teach herself.
the stories of the old tai chi masters include plenty of "flying" and all sorts of other amazing feats. its part of chinese martial arts culture, much like babe ruth hitting grand slams or insert football players name here scoring a touchdown with the entire opposing team wrapped around his ankles is to american sports culture.
the flying in itself isnt meant to be impressive, as you can see even shu lien (michelle yeoh) can do it to an extent. yes, its an exaggeration. the impressive part is when shes trying to shake him off the tree, and he just stands there. thats the essence of tai chi.
PS: wudang = wutang, and it has nothing to do with shaolin (buddhist, practitioners of kung fu), other than they both taught martial arts. they actually fought each other during one period in the uh... that era... you know the one... okay i suck at history.
PPS: ninjas are from japan!

just cultural differences i guess. im not sure if the average moviegoer in china would be able to infer that just by knowing he is from wudang, but i would assume so. probably like americans knowing that the yankees are from new york.

I loved this movie... except for the ending. The fighting, the music, everything was beautiful and engaging. The ending just SUCKED.

I got about 3/4's of the way through before I fell asleep. It is beautiful and awesome but kinda boring. I liked the young girl and the older woman much better in the Geisha movie.
