It was kind of a neat game. Gave it a shot when it first came out. After about 2 weeks, I was done playing.
Neat, but didn't keep my interest. I'm sure it's changed quite a bit though. May give it another look.

I did beta on this and lost interest after a bit. Played some again recently and it *has* changed some. My experiences never found it to be super immersive story line wise like those original days of EQ1 (or even EQ2) but it's a great casual game and at least lower to mid levels don't require raids and such. They've just added a type of crafting and items which I didn't get to explore much, but it seemed straightforward. I think this is a good game for soloists or people who can only play in small chunks of time like an hour or two.

The developers have made a lot of modifications to City of Heroes and City of Villains since it first came out. The main storyline is continuously being advanced through free expansions known as Issues.

While some of the changes and developments have been greeted with enthusiasm and some with dismay, City of Heroes and City of Villains is a very easy game to get into, for both casual gaming as a solo player or the more team oriented player.

Some of the main changes involved the implementation of:

Badge Collecting - over 400 collectible badges and growing. Everything from defeating x number of certain types of enemies, to exploration and history badges, PvP badges, and Accolades (which give great Temporary Powers)

Crafting - salvage drops, costume drops, recipe drops achieved through missions and Task Forces/Strike Forces. Can be brought and sold at Markets/Black Markets and players can create special Invention Origin enhancements that give additional bonuses to their character (like increased resistances, defenses, chances for x type of damage etc.)

Costumes - Developers continue to introduce new costume pieces and outfits to the already extensive character creation and tailoring system that delight some players and make others shudder. (Kilts anyone?)

Events - from player organized parties, to developer originated special themed events (Halloween, Winter) to storyline progression through things like the recent Rikti Invasion.

Emoticons - constantly being updated so your characters can do and say all sorts of whacky things.

Overhaul of Standard Contact and Task Force/Strike Force Mission - Opponent groups have improved (though still simple AI), they will patrol, ambush, call in reinforcements and pursue/hinder the player when they attempt to defuse bombs, rescue hostages or set bombs, kidnap innocents etc.

Police Band/Newspaper Contact Missions - The addition of these contacts opens up a whole raft of missions that can be done when you have run out of normal Contacts or want to do something different like Safeguard/Raid missions.

Veteran Rewards - based on the months you have spent with an active account in City of Heroes/City of Villains. For every three months you get a different 'reward' like a permanent additional power, free costume changes, free respecifications (ability to redesign your character powers), base items, and even a non-combat pet.

I've tried EQ2 and DnDO but always ended up coming but to City of Heroes and City of Villains because it's pretty simple, standard fare.

Age of Conan may change that, but for now I'll pretend to be a hero (and villain!)
