The problems I have with Ipod are the interface and the fact it locks up intermittently and I have to wait for it to discharge to reset itself. Itunes is a piece of shit and the UI on the machine itself is clunky as fuck. Im going to be giving

mine wouldnt turn off once and i had to wait for it to run out of power. hopefully never again. since then, i realized you can both reset the ipod manually and put it into sleep mode via the menu (i was trying to do it by holding down the play button)

My daughter gave me her IPod, when she got one of the video ones. Now she's going to be getting the new ITouch, so she's giving me her video one.

I never have any trouble with ITunes, or the interface.

This has happened 3 times so far to me. Once in the house, once in the car, and once jogging. I was not messing with it at the time either. Its a hard lock and once the machine has died it will be fine which is a couple of hours since the batteries don't last for shit either. I get about 3 hours tops out of mine. I think the thing that pisses me off the most is when I first got the hunk of shit the battery would not hold a charge for more than an hour. I had to wait 2 fucking hours at the ipod store for a "technology specialist" LOL LOLOLOLO erase and reload the software on the machine. That in itself is fucking horrid customer service. You have to take a fucking number and wait for hours.

It's the whole smug bullshit attitude apple and its fanbois have had for years. I will never own another apple product for sure.

First off, you don't go to an Apple Store for support unless you have a laptop, and maybe not even then.

Secondly, the manual does state (or at least the Gen 1 and 2 manuals do, not sure about newer ones) state that if you have problems charging, reloading the iPod's OS should alleviate the problem.

i bought mine online. fuck going to an apple store and being helped by one of those mac-loving metrosexuals

I got mine at costco and would not have been in the store if I had not had a couple of locks and the battery issue. I certainly won't be back in there again.

Also not being able to manage multiple ipods on one itunes erks me as well I understand its there weak ass way of trying to keep folks from sharing music. All it does is piss most folks off because they have to burn cds and transfer the music to another computer with itunes on it. It's a hassle not a solution.

We will see what I think of rockbox.

My iPod Photo (yeah, last revision before video, but I'm not the type to watch movies on a small screen in public so I was fine... was more miffed that I customized mine via colorwarepc.com (I'm lazy and they do it very cleanly) and Apple decided to finally sell black iPods mere months later) has that lockup problem from time to time. Waiting for it to discharge sucks since it still holds close to the full rated charge of 15ish hours. I usually turn the backlight on full and tell it to cycle through my photo album to discharge it faster.

First off, why bother having customer service of any kind then? Also who would want to buy a product where they get 0 support for when they have a problem. Call me crazy.

Secondly, the smug kid at the front desk I am sure has seen the issue many times and should have told me that. Instead I wasted 2 hours of my life on something that I could have done myself. This actually makes me less happy with my purchase than before. I guess its my fault for not reading the book from cover to cover which I think I did.

As far as managing an iPod itself, I've not had a problem as long as the manual manage music is checked.

As for uploading songs onto your computer through iTunes, well the best way to get around this is go into your iPod itself and locate the hidden music folder. Once you have done that all you have to do is copy to your hard drive, then locate the folders and add it to iTunes. Sometimes the names won't come up right, they will named a 4 letter code (like XYJL.xxx), but you will get the music. I've done this quite a few times to give all my music to my friends and family when visiting.

As for the iPod locking, I've only had problems with 1 of the 3 that I've bought. It was a 3G black and white LCD that I eventually sent back to Apple and they sent me back a new one that I still use at work, basically because a 3 year battery doesn't hold a charge worth crap. Occasionaly it will still lockup, but all you have to do is flip the hold button back and forth, then hold the play and menu button down and it will shut down and reset.

I'm not saying that they are the best in the world, but they let me see the artist, song title, album title in relatively large letters. That coupled with the ease of locating songs and getting them to play is what sells me. Granted the only other mp3 player that I had was a Sony MD player that i couldn't get to load songs worth a damn.

Sony pisses me off every time it comes up with a new proprietary storage medium. Sadly, my current phone and planned upgrade both make use of one such annoyance (Memory Stick Micro), but at least I'm happy with the device quality.

Thanks Veb I will fool around with this trick a bit and see what I think.

I like my Sansa - just don't buy it at Best Buy, they sell the neutered kind that will only work with RealPlayer.
