I thought the story of 'The day the earth stood still' was of an alien race coming to tell us that we were too violent for our own good and was there to kill us all with his pet robot? Granted he did it in the nicest way possible.

No, it was them telling us we were too violent for our own good, that we were being watched, and that we could lay down arms and peacefully join the spacefarers or be obliterated.

Course "we" did kill the guy. Nice way to say "welcome to earth"
