quoting the site, underlines by me :

Recently, a file was uploaded to the Internet purporting to be a copy of a letter from Big Spring High School to a student regarding a two hour detention. The uploaded letter was an altered version of a detention letter sent to a student. Unfortunately, privacy concerns prevent the School District from giving a full explanation of the nature and source of the letter’s alteration at this time. The Big Spring School District does have confirmation that the discipline letter was altered.

The reports, blogs and other sources on the Internet indicating that a Big Spring student was assigned detention for using the Firefox internet browser instead of Internet Explorer are untrue and were based on the fake letter. Detention is assigned in our schools after appropriate warnings are given. If students continue to engage in non-academic activities or fail to follow a teacher’s directive during class time, discipline can and will be assigned.

I seriously doubt it was a hoax... The school is not denying the kid got detention or even that it was based on this scenario but that it wasn't over him using the browser. I can play the word dance game with the best of them so I see right through this... Yes, it was an altered document. They removed the kid's name. Ok so it wasn't because of the browser? I'm sure their logic is it was over him not being a mindless slave and obeying every order given to him by his teacher.

People who do not question authority bug the shit out of me. You're telling me that just because someone takes a job as a teacher that makes them a God in their little realm and you're going to tell your kids to follow their orders without question? Obviously don't be rude when you do it but *YES* ask questions and don't just blindly follow orders! This is America we have freedom of speech.. USE IT. We are not a nation of followers and we should not be trying to raise children to be them either. Parents should be quick to race to their kids' defense. I was raised to be polite and well mannered and yet to speak my mind and stand up for what I believe. If we don't keep instilling those ideas in the youth of today's head what will we become a nation of??? Mindless sheep following orders because we're "supposed" to?

I'm not even going to touch on some of the posts here because OMG I respect peoples' rights to their own opinions but damn I don't agree with a lot of them! gah!

Plus... People who are not smarter about technology than the people they are teaching are antiquated and obsolete and should not be doing that job anymore.. get training and go with progress or retire =)

Heh. My daughter was raised to be extremely strong, independent, and opinionated, and anyone who knows her will attest to that.

As an example, I taught her that sharing was a good thing, but that just because she was a child, and had a lot of toys, it didn't mean she was obligated to share EVERYTHING.

Further, just because she was a child, it didn't mean she had to do everything any adult told her to do. I told her she had the right to protect herself from harm, and if an adult told her to do anything that she felt might cause her harm, she had the right to tell them no. There is such a thing as respecting authority, but not to your own detriment.

In this case, with a teacher telling the student to stop using a program, much like the teacher who told my daughter to draw her picture, and there was no harm that would befall the student if they followed those instructions. The teacher didn't tell the student to jump from a fourth floor window, or prohibit them from going to the bathroom if the need was present. It's a very different battle here, we're talking about fighting. Just like in real life...you have to learn which battles are truly worth fighting for in life, and which ones are inappropriate.

Adults teach children, usually because they have much more knowledge, and experience than the child does. If an adult can offer up an explanation for the requests they make of the child, and the child will understand, I'm completely in favor of that. Depending on the child, they may not be able to grasp the reasons, and often times that leads to the adult giving an order, rather than a defined request. Sometimes a person just doesn't have time, right then and there, to explain things...does that mean the child doesn't have to do what the adult says?

Again, if it involves the child's safety, mental health, etc., yes, I agree they have every right in the world to stand up to an adult and defy them. This is a classroom, where the child is being taught something on the computer...the teacher has rights too, as part of their job to teach, and in this case I think the child was in the wrong.

This isn't the 60's - there's no injustice that a child needs to stand up to. We're talking about being told to shut off a program and a kid argued. The kid is being disruptive, not expressing their rights. Shut the fuck up and listen - you're in school to learn not talk back to an adult because 'they' might not agree with this adult's thinking.

I went to school with plenty of kids who felt the need to stand up and bitch. There's a time and place for that. There are really fucked up teachers. In 'this' situation - real or otherwise - the kid should have done what they were told. I would have smacked Catherine upside her head and asked her what she was thinking. Want to debate? Join the debate team or go to college. Does this mean that I don't believe my child or I wouldn't listen to her side first, uninterrupted? Of course not. It means that I'm teaching my daughter restraint and respect for authority and elders, not to 'be a follower' or 'be mindless sheep'. That's a bit extreme and rather insulting.

lol Its not a whole "mindless sheep" thing its called respect .. donno maybe some people have heard of it maybe not ? .. I know its an ancient word that rarely anyone knows the meaning of now days tho :( hehe

Like I said here you have to sign a paper with the rules on it if you want to use their computers. If you dont agree then don't sign it .. I mean its pretty simple. So I am guessthing they agreed then felt that their rules > those they agreed to follow /shrug I can see where each side is coming from but Rules are rules and there is a time and place for everything.

Sure state what it is but dont sit and bitch to a teacher about something they have already made their mind up on , specially in frount of the class. If it was that important to them then they should have pulled the teacher aside explained to them , show them some information on the subject . I doubt anyone here likes to be bitched out and thumbed down on in frount of their employees, etc /shrug what makes it different

Then again they are a teen I am sure at that age I would have totaly done the same lol
