Building A New Computer - Input Pls!

OK my current PC is about 5 years old, my specs are :

AMD Athalon XP 2100+ 1.74GHz w/ 2.5 GB RAM
vid card is an NVidea GeForce 7600GS 256k

I'm tired of 8 - 12 hours+ to render a picture (and we're not talking bigger than maybe 1800x1800!) and there's no way I can use Bryce it just isn't viable to render from there (even if what I tried was worth it *snicker* ) Just running Daz|Studio for long periods of time has my system jerky and if I try to render and do anything else.. *hahahaha*

Here is the rough guidelines of what I want :

Intel 2.0+GHz dual core 4GB RAM
GeForce 8600 GT w/ 512k or possibly dual 8500 w/ 512k ea (dream is dual 8600 but would settle for one now on an SLI ready board so I can add later)

Will be running XP Pro SP2

I want to build a system that will last me another 5ish years give or take with some small upgrades (memory, vid card etc) Should I go quad proc? I thought I had heard there were problems with those and compatibility with Poser / Daz|Studio and other things, or is that just Vista and I'm confused? Also if I was to compromise on anything what should it be? I have a budget of aprox $600 for all this and I need new case and all the goodies so I was thinking a good barebones since I still have my HDs but that's about all since I'd like to leave my current machine as intact as possible for a "spare". I am willing to go 2GB memory now and upgrade as funds permit so that's a little wiggle room I think.

And if anyone knows of someplace to get a sexy red case, mid tower or smaller but no micros (and no room for a full tower) please let me know.

Thanks for any input or leads =)

I wish someone could convince my boss RE: 4 gigs of ram in a 32bit OS computer. I don't know if it's because I lack certain equipment or what but he refuses to believe me. And then he gets mystified when the system only recognizes *gasp* 2.8 gig!

Anyway, I wouldn't overlook your hard drive - don't want it to be a bottleneck to that nice system you've got planned. Having plenty of space on a clean (no more than 75 percent full, defragged, etc) hard drive can really effect performance. Affect. Effect. God fucking damn, which is it?!?!! Also with the newer video cards you might want to check your power supply and make sure it meets the minimum requirement. It's better for the life of the components to have a good stable power supply with enough juice to get the job done.

The only other thing I would add here is depending on that app and how it is written and works with the OS, boosting hardware may simply speed up your rendering (even considerably) but may not necessarily allow you to multitask any better. Some apps will just grab any resources available and do not take too kind to sharing. I do not use any rendering software personally so I don't know for sure, but I know some apps in the business world (SQL comes to mind) loves to hog your shit.

He won't believe you because even Microsoft's website (here for example) shows that it supports 4GB.

But in The Real World, that place we mortals live in, it ain't fuckin' so. Threads like this need to be shared.

Update again... memory was backordered but finally shipping so YAAY! Went out this weekend and settled on a case. I give up on finding a recent looking red one *sigh* I do like this Antec Nine Hundred ( http://www.directron.com/ninehundred.html#caption ) Saw it up at Fry's Sat on sale for $149.99. Found it today at Directron for $88. And that place is so close I will go pick it up at lunch most likely! My plan is to add in a couple more red lit fans, and to eventually swap out the two blue ones in the front for red. Not the sexy red machine I dreamed of, but it's practical. And that's me.

Any specifics to know about power supplies? I know I want SLI ready and I found this one :

Also is there anything special to know about picking out a DVD drive these days?

(And yes.. my budget is SOOO blown *sigh* ) I do have a hand me down basic 512k vid card I can use at first which will help until I can splurge on two of the ones I want down the line thank goodness!!!

That PS should be fine and no the brand of DVD drive really isnt going to matter. Things to consider though are: Does the drive write dual layer discs? Do you want lite scribe? Light scribe allows you to use CD and DVD that the drive will "engrave" information like a disc title on the top. I have used Lite on drives for years. They are cheap and work fine.
