Its really weird. I can jump out of a plane at 10k feet, but I get sick to my stomach when I look over something to the depths below.

Not so much.
It's a perspective thing.
At 10k feet, you're not likely to see anything nearby that actually allows your brain to gauge how high up you are and how close you are to truly going "splat."

At the top of this waterfall, though, you get a sense of scale. :)

You must be correct...I remember looking out of the plane before we readied to jump, while I was still sitting on the floor of the plane, and thinking...FUCK! However, once I got out, and finally did jump...that sensation was gone.
