Muses
I have trouble conjuring stuff from scratch. I need something to go on, else I'm thinking of everything and nothing at the same time. It's overwhelming and confusing.
I basically rely on context to stimulate creativity, be it verbal or visual. How do you guys go about it? What sources do you use? A book, a magazine, TV, posters, knick-knacks? How long do you spend contemplating an object before ideas pop up?

Music is a big inspiration for me, as well as deviantart.com I'd browse deviantart all day if I could. Makes me want to try freehand so bad...i wouldnt know where to begin though =/
Music helps me put that spin on a sig, I've noticed. Whether I use a line of a song for a quote or the tempo inspires the style of the sig. Helps me concentrate and unfocus, so to speak.

I think of it like stew in a crockpot. You throw in the meat and stock and veggies and spices, all of your various inputs you have for a project, and then just let the cooker do its thing. My best times to set the cooker are when I’m driving, or before I go to bed. Reading a book, playing chess with Fozz, and chatting are also good things for me. Sometimes smoking and pacing can speed the cooker along. Things that keep the synapses firing I think is a good thing, and when I’m smoking and pacing I think I’m relaxed enough to let my mind fire away. I’m honestly not sure what’s going on in that little brain of mine…stuff goes in and stuff comes out. I actually am thinking about everything and nothing at the same time once I’ve put enough crap into the cooker; I think that’s a good thing. The stew is doing its job. Once in a while I’ll wander by, take a bite, and maybe decide it needs more peas or something. Then go back to smoking and pacing. Eventually the stew is ready and it’s time to eat it, or in this case execute your idea :).
I’m wording this badly :\. But this is why I spend time looking at other people’s stuff and reading magazines and listening; it’s the spice that goes in the cooker. I don't much care to understand exactly how it all happens...I just don't want it to stop :D.

You would never believe what my muse is LOL The person I'm creating the sig for! Usually I try to sit down and talk with the person in some sort of chat program for a hour or two before I do their sig. And I'll save the convo so I can reference back to it from time to time. Most of the time my house is full of noise. I've found I can't concentrate if it's too quiet LOL

I have my most creative thoughts when I am on the toilet. :o
Music definitely inspires me too, though. I find classical music when I am writing to be the best, Mozard, Gershwin, Beethoven...all my good writing buddies. ;)

I have two creative processes. For writing, I sleep on it, literally. I put myself to sleep imagining the story, then I dream it, then I wake up and write it.
For painting, I use music and reference pictures, be they screen shots or photos of the same position or clothing I want to paint. I pick music that fits the theme of the doll I'm making. If it is something on the sexy side I listen to Barry White and the like, if it's a Warrior's doll then I listen to stoic music like the soundtrack from Braveheart.

A lot of the time, inspiration strikes me when I'm driving or showering. Kind of frustrating, cause usually I don't have access to a pad of paper
When creating, fresh air (windows open, or sitting outside) helps if it's daytime... if night, mostly darkness. At one point, music helped, but lately my tastes have had lyrics, and that can interfere with writing.
