UK bans 'Wanted' movie posters and causes the end of the world

http://afk2pee.com/blog/?p=433
Two posters for an Angelina Jolie film have been criticised by advertising watchdogs for making guns attractive.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled the Wanted posters were not suitable to be seen by children.

It added that the use of a glamorous actress, gun images and aspirational text “could glamorise violence”.

But seven people who complained the posters were inappropriate at a time of concern about gun crime did not have that particular view upheld by the ASA.
They received 17 complaints. I actually looked up the population of the United Kingdom. As of July 2007 there were:

60,776,238

There you have it. Stupidity at its finest.
The ASA said in its ruling that “we acknowledged most viewers would understand the posters reflected the content of an action film”.
This is europe we’re talking about now, right? Where they have the most ridiculously sexual and graphic commercials ever? Where Posh Spice is from? Prince Charles? I don’t get it.

Its also got a shitload less gun related death than the US. Maybe it works /shrug.

if movie posters are the influence for american violence...

i can't even think of anything to say about that.

as far as there being less UK than US.

i believe UK has ~ 60million where US has ~300million. Of course there's significantly less. but i imagine the percentage rate is similar.

i couldn't find a nice informative chart of gun-related deaths of different countries.

but in 2007 UK had ~ 22k gun related deaths ( includes suicide and accidental )
in 2004 US had ~ 29k

I never set eyes on a gun of any sort (outside Open Days to Armed Forces places) til I went to Wallmart, Madison :) Guns are more readily accessable over there IMO but doesn't stop people getting a hold of them here I suppose. Knife crime seems to be the big one atm

I asked the BX gun counter in Alaska how long it took to purchase a gun.

'About ten minutes.'
'Wow, that's it?'
'Well, if they have a record or something, it could take...about fifteen minutes?'
'Oh well - that's a pretty good safeguard.'

He didn't get my sense of humor.

/shrug I don't get bent about gun crime. My hubby is a cop, he has a work gun which is locked in a safe in another suburb so noone in my house is likely to get shot by it. (He works as a court Prosecutor atm so he doesn't take the gun to work anymore). Its really hard to buy a gun in Aus legally. You need to be a farmer or a recreational shooter who is in a registered club to have a gun and not be in the army or the cops or a specially licenced security guard. Which means most folks down here don't have anything to do with guns.

I like it that way.

I agree Tam. but not having guns legally available in america means you have no protection against all the people that smuggle them.

Guns are -so- welcome in fact, you can legally shoot someone who is on your property in texas without repercussion.

Just watched a 911 call the other day, Texas grandma shot dude who busted in her house and was hiding in a closet ( to evade police for stealing a car ).

He didn't make any threatening moves or anything, was just hiding in a closet. and she shot him. twice. and wasn't charged. lol

I am not moving to Texas. *shudder*

US = Jason Bourne

Ohh, not to mention total ewber hawtness, oh yeah *drool*

Guns and me... we don't get along. I shot a .22 once, taking a hunter's safety course, that was enough for me. I certainly won't tell others that they can't have a gun; they just need to be ready to face me if anyone in my family is ever shot. ;)

And from what I've been reading in the Daily Mail across the pond, it's knives that they've had a problem with rather than guns :(

Well that's because it isn't the guns that are the problem, it's the people. Therefore when you take away the guns, they're just gonna find some other weapon to do violence with. Guns don't shoot people by themselves ya know.
