Tropic Thunder - Never go full retard.

Once upon a time…there was a retard.

It’s not politically correct by any stretch of the imagination and it caused quite the uproar but you know what, it probably added a ridiculous amount of money to its overall take. Any publicity is good publicity, whether it’s good or bad and honestly…this was bad. Well, it was awkward, much like ‘Borat’. It was ‘inappropriately funny’, at best. Honestly it was the funniest damn awkward thing I had seen in a long time and I’ll probably go to hell just for thinking it.

Oh this is about Tropic Thunder, Ben Stiller’s new movie. Yeah, ironic isn’t it? It bumped #2 all time box office king ‘Dark Knight’ out of its top spot and grossed $37 million for its opening. Not bad, not great but despite the controversy (or maybe because of it) people went out and saw it.

The movie opens with a series of fake trailers for each of the main stars, all of whom have less than stellar careers and are starring in a book to film by writer John “Four Leaf” Tayback played by Nick Nolte.

[INDENT]A commercial depicts rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) promoting his two brands: the “Booty Sweat” energy drink and “Bust-A-Nut” candy bar, while performing his hit song, “I Love Tha’ Pussy”. The first trailer shows action star Tugg Speedman’s (Ben Stiller) latest film, ‘Scorcher VI: Global Meltdown’, a film so repetitive of it’s five predecessors that even the trailer narrator sounds shaky about it. Another trailer features funnyman Jeff “Fatty” Portnoy (Jack Black), playing the entirety of “America’s favorite obese family” in the highly flatulent ‘The Fatties: Fart 2′. The final trailer, entitled ‘Satan’s Alley’, features Australian “five-time Oscar winner” Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and Tobey Maguire (as himself) as two monks who begin an impassioned affair.

The title of this review refers to Downey’s character telling Stiller’s that his reach for an Oscar with the movie ‘Simple Jack’ was “too” in character. It lends to the ending of the movie which shows the characters redeeming themselves.

Honestly I’d give this movie a 7 out of 10 - it really isn’t that good, save for a few really hysterical parts involving Jack Black and the minor characters. Any movie starring Ben Stiller really isn’t going to be that good, but the controversy is what gave this movie the push it needed to knock ‘Dark Knight’ out of the top spot. It’s an awkwardly funny movie, much like ‘Meet the Parents’. Is it worth the hype…not really, but if you can sneak in or have someone else pay your way - definitely go, if not for the beginning fake trailers.

you're fired.

this was the best comedy i've EVER seen. And Ben Stiller did a fuckingamazing job at it.

His other shit embarrasses me. Meet the Parents/Fockers? I spent the whole movies covering my face and didn't laugh or giggle or chuckle or even snort one time. They were just ridiculous and not comedy. It was too strained to be comedy. They tried too hard to make people laugh for those movies, but this one? It was just set up perfectly. I loved it to pieces and can't wait for the DVD cause the extras will rock!

Fuck the P.C. people who say "retards are people too". They made fun of everyone in this movie. The white people, the black people, the white people trying to be black people. all sorts of shit.

i laughed my ass off uncontrollably in the theater. it was great. i'd give it a 10 ranked next to any other comedy i've seen.

My favorite thing about this movie is that Robert Downey, Jr. wasn't just a black man. He was a black man I went to college with and worked with before I got fired. Vietnam vet. Wide-eyed stare. Low, gruff voice. Same expression on his face when he's fucking with people - "Just 'cause it's a theme song don't make it not true." Same hair/beard. Breaks into song randomly (although Downey's character just quoted a song instead of singing). Slight southern accent. Somewhat religious, regardless of whether a situation calls for it.

...and you really can't tell when he's taking himself seriously or not.

It was funny, it just wasn't the funniest thing ever. I think I enjoyed it more than Veb, though.

Vex summed it up for me. I thought it was fantastic. Tom Cruise almost entirely redeemed himself and I loathed him before. I'm not a Ben Stiller fan, but I loved the shit out of this one. Robert Downey Jr made the movie (and Tom Cruise). I actually thought Jack Black's slap stick stuff was the only parts that were just overdone and not nearly as new humor as the rest of the movie.

Jack Black was hilarious in it, I thought. Especially the part where they tie him up to the tree and all the withdrawal shit he blurts out.

Ok Tom Cruise was funny in the movie, but that dance at the ending was awkward, not funny. It was like reliving 'Meet the Parents'.
