Ridley Scott to Fight Forever War
Blade Runner helmer plans new sci-fi flick.

UK, October 13, 2008 - Having already cemented his name in cinema history with two of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made in Alien and Blade Runner, Ridley Scott is set to return to the genre with an adaptation of Joe Haldeman’s 1974 novel, The Forever War.
Working with Fox 2000, Scott initially wanted to adapt the tome directly after finishing Blade Runner in 1982 but the project was held up by rights issues. “I first pursued ‘Forever War’ 25 years ago and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since”, he told Variety. “It’s a science-fiction epic, a bit of ‘The Odyssey’ by way of Blade Runner, built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise.”
Said premise is a soldier who battles an enemy in deep space for only a few months, only to return home to a planet he doesn’t recognise some 20 years later.
Scott’s next project is his delayed Robin Hood project Nottingham starring Russell Crowe, which is pencilled in for release at the end of 2009.

he Forever War is a 1974 science fiction novel by Joe Haldeman. It won the Nebula Award in 1975 and the Hugo Award in 1976. Both an action-laden and contemplative story of an interstellar war between humanity and the enigmatic Tauran species, it deals with themes like the inhumanity of both war and its attendant bureaucracy, as well as with the results of time dilation space travel which may cause a soldier to return to his home only after centuries have gone by.
There are also two sequels of sorts, Forever Free and Forever Peace (the latter only shares the theme, not the setting), as well as the novella A Separate War which is set in parallel to the latter part of “The Forever War”. The three books are considered by some to constitute The Forever War series. It also inspired a comic book and a board game.[1]

I’m a die hard Ridley Scott fan since Alien, although I’m not hot to trot to see the neutrally reviewed ‘Body of Lies’ starring Russell Crowe (who is also starring in Scott’s next project - ‘Nottingham’) and Leo DiCapsomething. Anything sci-fi by Scott is worth the money in my book.
The book I’ve read a little about, maybe even a short story snippet of it somewhere, but I’ll have to ask my father (who has like a million sci fi/fantasy books in his library) about it.
