Harry Dresden - Wizard for Hire

Anyone else reading this? I'm on book 10, White Night.

I'd have to go look, but we just read the last one that was in paperback. Aren't many that I just have to have soon as they come out in hard cover anymore when they are friggin' 25 bucks at the time :(

Interesting title - how is it?

It's fricking AWESOME. He's a private eye wizard in Chicago who starts off doing consultation for the Special Investigation unit of the police department. No one believes in magic, but it's very real. The author Jim Butcher does an awesome job weaving in the magic world with the human world and the on going storyline of who Harry is, and more importantly, what Harry is - is awesome!

Harry is the quintessential knight in shining armor for any woman in distress, which sometimes gets him into some weird shit. There are secrets about his magic lineage that no one wants to tell him about, but because of it people in the magic world are terrified of him. He has a hilarious sarcastic sense of humor, and although there are some annoying characters, everyone really changes over time, especially Harry.

I really enjoy the series.

There are several similarities in the settings, but it's the fast paced writing style this lady has that reminds me so much of the Dresden Files. GO GO GO from beginning to end. I just realized there's a 4th book out already so I'm grabbing that now myself :D

http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Called-Mercy-Thompson-Book/dp/0441013813/ref=pd_sim_b_4 Oh yeah, another good one that's more paranormal and less romance, tho there is some romance it's just not the predominant feature of these books. Mercy rocks as a main character :)

I'm sexist, I admit it. The only female strong character I have ever been able to read was Kinsey Milhone from the Alphabet murder series by Sue Grafton. I'll take a look at them though, eve-e. =)

Moon Called is good, I started that series.

The last Harry book I read was I think Death Masks.

And if you like Harry, there was a Dresden Files series from Sci-Fi, which was unfortunately cancelled after just a single season.

Thank you, no. I hate when they make movies/tv shows out of books. It ultimately never translate as well. Plus that guy is not how I pictured Harry or the girl they used for Murphy.
Eve 17 years ago
Yeah while the series they did for Harry was okay and I probably could have gotten into it for more than one season, it was -not- the Harry or Murphy from the books. When I picture Murphy, I picture that lil blond from back in the day who played in the RoboCop movies lol. She was tiny, had the short blond hair, and just makes me think of "tiny, but fierce!". Plus I never made it thru one episode without Kev bitching about the fact that they gave Harry a fuckin' hockey stick for his staff, and a drum stick for a wand. Oh and they totally did Bob different, tho I kinda liked their version, too.

As for strong female chars, trust me hon, I think you'll really like Mercy. The other one, I wouldn't exactly call her the strong one, but she is pretty damn humerous at least.

I mentioned this on DA. I have recently gotten hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse books. I ordered the 8 book set on Amazon. I practically inhaled the series and now am waiting with bated breath for the next one in May. I am such a geek, I have it preordered.

I am glad I read through this thread, I really need something cool to read now that I have gotten in the pattern of reading. I have ordered the book that Eve (because she included a link LOL). I will look into Roz' book series too. I may have watched some of the Dresden Files when it was Sci Fi...I am not really sure though.

Yeah I've done Sookie too and can't wait for the next one :D Some more to look into .... ya know, I really need to make a list of authors/series LoL I keep finding myself repeating the same ones over and over LoL Yet another reason I told hubby I want book shelves, just so I can put all my series together. If I get a chance soon, I'll post a new thread of my recommended reading ;)

*pokes Eve until she posts a list of her recommended books* :p

That would be great Eve. I was so desparate for some literary entertainment that I read Charlaine Harris' series Harper Connelly starting with Grave Sight. Pretty cool premise for a series, I like the way Harris draws a complete character with words. To me, this was pretty light reading and I got through it in a coupleof days.

I wonder if my local Borders has any of the Harry Dresden novels...hmmmm...something to think about.

Ow! *pokes Shae back!* Gimme some time wench! I gotta shut this puter down, move it to the other desk, and set up my new puter first :p

Almost done with book 11 - Small Favors. I was reading a review of it on another site when someone mentioned the repetitive information that each book has - description of his car, his power, his apartment, his friends, etc. They couldn't quite get why he does this with EVERY SINGLE BOOK. Obviously this guy is an idiot - the nice thing about the Harry books is that you could almost pick any one, any where in the series, and not be totally and completely lost.

Personally I'd never read a book that was part of a series, unless it was book 1. Bugs the hell out of me to jump in the middle of a series and that's exactly what my father tried to get me to do when we couldn't find his book 4. He handed me book 6 and said, 'here, just read this one.'

'ARE YOU CRAZY? Dad that's out of sequence!'

He does that all the time, /shiver

On the final book - Turncoat.../SQUEE!
Eve 16 years ago
Booooo! I still need that one! *huffs*
ROzbeans 16 years ago
Finished Turncoat last night. I am sad. =( Not that it ended badly, but that it's over until probably next year - although I thought I heard something about another book this year, but I doubt it.

Didn't resolve a lot of the issues that have cropped up over the span of 11 books. There were some bad ass fights at the end, a sad end to a relationship, a change to Thomas that is heartbreaking, and a bastard does a good thing. Still, makes me sad.
Eve 16 years ago
I stumbled across a book, albeit a small one, that's apparently an offshoot of the series for Thomas. Isn't out quite yet, and for the less than 100 pages book, I think it was a lil pricey. Can't remember the name now but it was on Amazon with the Harry books.
ROzbeans 16 years ago
Yeah my father picked it up. He's also picking up the graphic novel they have out for Harry. I refuse to buy anything that costs more than 8.95 lol.
