Eden Lake and Martyrs
If you are into hardcore Euro horror like I am, rent these two movies.
Good acting - Nothing cheesy here and certainly no B movies. The blood is well justified and isnt just there as dressing.
The same director who made "The Descent" directed these two movies. They are excellent.
These Movies will shock you and the Saw's dont have shit on them shock factor wise.

Okay, that movie Martyrs was fucking sick, and creepy...probably one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. I got almost sick to my stomach watching the latter part of it, but like a traffic accident, I couldn't look away. I wish I had.
I'm very skeptical about watching Eden Lake now. :(

This is why Euro horror is the leader in horror these days. They are very very original and scary as fuck in most cases and sick. While American horror keeps pushing out these remakes (see My Bloody Valentine and Dawn of the Dead remakes etc) The Euro scene is doing some hardcore original horror and taking it back to the 70s and 80s style with some truly troubleing / dark content.
Another thing about Euro horror is that these are not B-flicks or some cheesy acting movies. They are all actually well acted movies with good to great camera work and back drops. This is another element in whch makes Euro Horror even more creepy.
Every tme I watch one of the good Euro horror flicks - I always come out of it feeling like I did something wrong. It makes me feel dirty, but in a good way. This is what makes a great horror/shock flick..If you come out of it feeling like this or something similar, it did its job.
As far as Eden Lake goes - Be warned. Its about young teenagers who harass this engaged grown up couple on a camping trip....Its not your typical slash and bash film either....Its a survival horror with shock elements in it. I wont spoil any of it....However, the ending of the movie had me drop my jaw. It was fucking freaky as goddamn fuck because it was so realistic because it could happen to any of us. Anyway, stay away from this if you cannot stomach bad things being done to young teenagers and just true brutallity in general. It was well acted and its not some cheesy B-flick.
Martyrs was a bit more brutal than Eden Lake though. That opening sequence when that chick broke into the house and slaughtered that family (kids and all) and showed it in graphic detail was one of the most sick and vile scenes in horror movie history.
I also reccommend The Descent and a couple of other movies called Them and Frontiers.
PS. One thing I dislike about Euro horror is that chicks aways end up being in the starring role =p or the movie is about chicks in general (see Descent and Martyrs) hehe

Uh..the murders were one thing, but it was what came later down in that 'basement' that I had a difficult time stomaching. And wtf do they feel the need to make the scenes so freaking dark that you can't see anything? That always pisses me off. Anyway, I do have to agree the acting was good and the story was unique in Martyrs.
I turned off Eden Lake over half way in because I found it boring, and typical of those kinds of movies. I'll go back and watch the ending though, to see if I agree.
I saw Descent at the theaters and did like it, although when it got to the cave creatures it lost me some. The part that scared me the most was when the girl got caught in the rocks!
And, to me I'd much rather see a psychological horror movie. I really don't like slasher/gore movies. If it weren't for the final plot discovery in Martyrs, I wouldn't have found it interesting at all.

That's the best review of a movie genre I have ever read. I almost spit out my nectarine reading that. /claps

Well, I certainly don't see movies wanting to feel dirty afterward, and don't get the 'good way' of it either. But I'm old.
I did go back and watch the ending of Eden Lake, and still found nothing surprising. :(

DVD doesn't say anything about what version it is. /shrug
Can't imagine what would be different in a director's cut that would majorly change anything.

Well three of the scenes were cut up a bit. The dude when he was tied up and tortured was cut in one of the shows as well as that boy being burned alive along with the ending of it when the kids parents drag that woman into the bathroom. Some of the torture / kill scenes were prolonged in an uncut version.
And there is also two different endings (Like the Descent has three endings)
The ending im talking about isnt great like the Mist or anything. Still good though.

Cutting out or down torture scenes wouldn't be bad imo, or make the movie less scary to me. True horror to me is psychological, not something driven by gore and visual shock.
The ending I saw was what you posted, with the son just going along with it, and the last scene being of him staring into the mirror with a look of acceptance replacing the one of fear and disgust.
Also, if you thought the ending in The Mist was good, then I can say we don't have the same tastes in horror movies. Not that I thought that ending was horrible, but I didn't think it was anything truly great either. /Shrug - doesn't make either of us right or wrong, just differing opinions on what scares us.

I don't know why they made the ending of The Mist so tragic - that's not how it ended in the book.
Descent had 3 endings? I thought there were just two. Her getting away but seeing Juneau's ghost in her car and...wait, what were the other endings lol. I know there was a UK scarier version and the US version. Shit I have that DVD, too lol.

One ending was her closing her eyes while sitting in the car (when she was pulled over on the side of the road) and when she opens her eyes back up she finds out to her horror, that she is back in the cave again and it was all an hallucination (as far as her getting out went)
The 3rd ending is supposedly of her dying in the cave (I havent seen that ending) and Jouno is the one who escapes alive.
So two sad ending versions and one happy ending version to The Descent.
