Southland Tales
Anybody seen this movie? The preview looked pretty amazing to me, but the reviews were absolutely horrible. It's got The Rock (who I can't stand, but he seemed to be playing a non-super hero, which is a step up imo), Sarah Michelle Geller, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake (wtf?), Mandy Moore, Christopher Lambert, John Larroquette... directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko)... from the cast and the preview, I just can't imagine it being quite as bad as the reviews say.
www.southlandtales.com has a teeny tiny trailer I can't figure out how to make go fullscreen or get a direct link to without digging through source code. Deal with it.

Maybe that release date on the site is for one of the books.

I just finished watching it, and I thought it was pretty good. It's not as fast-paced as I thought it was going to be, but that's probably because it's over 2 hours long. The Rock was actually pretty good, all things considered. Sean William Scott was really good, too.
I don't see what the reviewers were talking about when they said the movie made no sense, was incoherent, was impossible to follow, etc. Only the ending was slightly ambiguous; I thought the rest of it made perfect sense. But I wouldn't recommend it for people who don't like to think about what they're watching.
And on a tangential note: There is a scene where a string quartet performs The Star Spangled Banner with some lady who seems to be singing in two languages. Really, really, really cool. Coolest rendition of that song that I've ever heard.

I'm considering buying the mp3 of just that one song. It's "Rebekah del Rio & The Section Quartet" whoever that is.

I just watched this again, and even knowing what happens, it was still hard to follow some of the plot twists, because it's just twist after twist after twist... but I still think the critics were foolish in saying that the movie made no sense or was incoherent. This movie is pretty awesome.
Dwayne Johnson and Sean William Scott are really good. The other movies I've seen of Sean William Scott (actually, all I can remember offhand is Bulletproof Monk, I think) weren't very impressive, but in this, he demonstrates way more acting ability. Even Justin Timberlake and Sarah Michelle Gellar are good.
If you like weird movies like Donnie Darko, then I recommend this. And it's not even as weird or as dark as Donnie Darko.
