The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Anyone else read this? Anyone who speaks Spanish? Or even better speaks Spanish and knows the Dominican Republic idioms and slang?

It was very...Pulitzer Prize, I thought. Well crafted but a little (okay actually kind of a lot) inaccessible due to an unusual structure, a large peppering of Spanish phrases, and a ton of inside jokes (some of which I got). Kind of did a post modern thing at the end. It had style and used all those literary devices you learn about in school. To be fair, it did also have some heart - more in seeing how the narrator's relationship with our hero grew rather than for the hero himself. There were many parts I identified with.

So...mixed review, there.

The novel is about a young man from the DR, living in New Jersey, who dreams of becoming the next Tolkien and also getting laid. Oscar is a huge nerd who loves Sci-Fi/Fantasy, table top RPGs, fanfiction, and post apocalyptic stories, and the book is liberally sprinkled with nerdy references to those things. Unfortunately for Oscar, he has a curse hanging over his head. The novel goes into the history of the curse (Fuku) as it follows the adventures of Oscar, his family, and his roommate.

Oooh. Usually I don't read much outside a certain genre, but I'm going to start trying. Might look at this - my family is dominican republic, maybe I can ask my dad.
