Firefox 5

Attention, dudes!

Mozilla has released Firefox 5 and has announced that they will NOT be doing any additional security updates for Firefox 4. That means that you need to upgrade immediately if you want holes in the browser to be patched as they're found and not left dangling in the wind waiting for some shitstain to exploit them.

The new version was pushed to the Fedora repositories today, and I've not had any problems since upgrading. None of the plugins I use (AdBlock, FireGestures, Stylish, XMarks, and a couple of Linux integration plugins) were knocked out by the upgrade, and it seems most of the changes were new back-end components that didn't touch much of the existing plugin API.

You can get Firefox 5 here. Or you can probably get it through the "Check for Updates" thing in the Tools (?) menu.

Also, here is an article talking about the upgrade and security issues.

Also, would it be possible to set up some kind of simple favicon for TAC? I've got it pegged as an application tab, but it only shows the default "document" favicon.

Seriously! It used to be a red crayon about 1,000 years ago but it has since disappeared.

I'll ask Vex when she gets back in town.

Oh hey - I'm totally spamming TAC with this.

Also posted about it in "Board Suggestions" because it seemed fitting.

FF5 rules bitches!

Thank God for those app tabs. It took me several failed attempts and subsequent reloads of the default UI to get my own jury-rigged app tab things, and to put the Favorites button in a not-worthless place.

Got it the other day; no problems so far.

I don't see what warranted a new version number though, and that kinda worries me.

It's mostly arbitrary right now, and it's meant to mimic Google Chrome's (see signature) release cycle. I guess they've got everyone thinking "High version number = pwn." Mozilla is in the process of migrating to a much, much faster development cycle than they've had in the past, and part of the things decided when they laid out the plan is that they're just going to increment the major version number based on the amount of time since the last release and not really on the feature set.

THAT BEING SAID, Firefox 7 is going to be the one to watch out for. They're putting in a totally new JavaScript engine to replace the fucking clunker they've got now, and they're finally separating tabs into different threads (also motivated by Chrome pwning the shit out of them in that department).

will it prevent babby?

With FF5, certain Java applets would load both 32- and 64-bit and obviously run slower than a beleaguered Beluga travelling uphill on Rollerblades. Thankfully, FF6 seems to have dropped the 32-bit one. I hope. It said it wasn't compatible and wouldn't be used, so I'm hoping for the best :\

That probably won't make it into Firefox 7, but it's on the agenda for the Firefox 8 sprint, so we'll see if they can get it stable before the feature freeze.

why is firefoxing updating to new versions like every month now?
Gongaa 10 years ago
They changed their development cycle a while back to facilitate much faster (but "smaller") releases. At the same time, they changed the criteria for what calls for a major version bump in order to get version numbers that look similar to those of IE and Chrome. The thought within Mozilla was that Joe Blow would look at Chrome and see that it's version 14 and then at Firefox, which was at version 3.5 at the time, and think "14 > 3.5, thus Chrome > Firefox."

This still hasn't made it into the trunk. =\

I'll trade Joe Blow two quarters for his one dollar! 2 > 1, YOU CANT LOSE, JOE! Also, I'm buying gold. And selling gold "coins" as well. Trust me folks, a deal this sweet comes around once every never, so act fast.
