Robotech

This was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. I remember it was only on for a short time, on channel 33 (UHF, not cable) when I was 8 or 9 years old. I was feeling nostalgic, so I ordered the box set of all 3 series (they are not actually all Robotech, but the American version of them changes the storylines and ties the 3 unrelated series into 1 long 3-part series). My favorite back then was the one they call "Genesis Climber MOSPEADA" in Japan, and who-knows-what in America. I'll find out when I get there; I'm still working on The Macross Saga.

I'll give a full review when I'm done watching the whole thing, but for now I thought I'd share this little piece of "subliminal messaging" I found. The plane on the lower right hand side (I cropped the rest of the image) shows up for less than one second, but, being a male human and thus highly attuned to all things sex related, I noticed it right away, and took a screenshot:

It's about as subtle as a sledgehammer in the face. What's up with the chick with no helmet and no uniform? lol. Silly Japanese cartoonists. They make a lot of "subtle" sex jokes that kids probably wouldn't catch, and they even show Minmei's bare ass in one scene... she's supposed to be 15 years old... is this legal? O_O

And then like 30 seconds after making this post, the next scene is this:

lol.

So far (still watching The Macross Saga), this is reminding me a lot of BSG 2.0 - millions of people dying all over the place, major characters dropping dead left and right... definitely not for children. I wonder how much worse the Japanese version is.

I got to disc 5 and found disc 6 in its place instead. So I looked at disc 6 and it was also disc 6. I am filled with the urge to stab somebody.

Strange that I didn't remember the tranny from the 3rd series... maybe considering the popular bands back in 1985, I didn't think it was too strange.

Did you know what a tranny was in 1985? I didn't

I knew what a granny was. She was that lady that was constantly trying to stuff me full of vegetable soup and chicken salad sandwiches.

Tranny was that thing on my friend's dad's car that was "busted."

I might not have known the word, but I knew men dressed in women's clothes; I saw MTV. I obviously didn't find it unusual. And I think I'm a few years older than you, which makes a big difference when the older one is only 8. Anyhow, they don't use the term. They just have a dude who is like an undercover freedom fighter posing as a famous female singer... rather, he IS the famous female singer, but he's not... bah whatever, you know what I mean.

Oh RIGHT, I remember that character. Yeah that freaked me out a little too when I saw that growing up. =/ I didn't think he was a pretty chick at all.

When I first saw him and heard his voice (before finding out it was a guy) I was like "Jesus Christ that looks and sounds like a dude", but when he took off his makeup and his shirt and revealed his true identity, shit got even weirder. I think it's the voice.
