Okay, made this again tonight. (Dudes, I got a kilo of Brussels sprouts for 0.79 € - I'll be eating them for a week!) This time I made a pork chop in the same pan, and I added onions (halved and sliced) and garlic (finely chopped).
I boiled the sprouts for 5 minutes this time, then drained, cooled, and cut them, etc. Pork chop went in the pan and did its thing for a minute or two, then the onions for about 2 minutes. Then the chilies and Brussels sprouts went in at the same time and fried with the onions for about 3 or four minutes. Then the garlic went in, then about 30 seconds later I tossed in the ginger. Fried that for about a minute, took the pork chop out, and deglazed the spot where it was frying with about a thimbleful of water (I would have used lemon juice if I weren't cooking on cast iron). Mix that shit up immediately after the water / lemon juice goes in, fry it for a second to get rid of the water, and you're done.
Gongaarian Brussels Sprouts
Sup dudes.
I was in the mood for something different tonight but didn't want to spend all evening cooking, so I came up with a simple way to cook Brussels sprouts that I had never tried before. You'll need the following:
- a prime number of Brussels sprouts (I used 13)
- a red Serrano chili pepper, chopped*
- a 1" or so chunk of ginger, grated
- a lemon
Clean your Brussels spouts and remove the lower part of the bud and the outer leaves. Parboil / blanch what's left for 3-4 minutes in salted boiling water. Drain and put them in cold water to keep them from turning gray and stop the cooking. You definitely don't want Brussels sprouts to overcook**. Drain thoroughly and cut the spouts in half. They'll probably release some more water as you do, so drain them again afterwards.
Heat some kind of fat (butter, oil... peanut oil would be good) in a pan over medium high heat (don't let your butter burn!) and add the Brussels sprouts when hot. Fry them for about 3 - 4 minutes and add the chilis. Fry that for about 3 - 4 more minutes, then reduce heat to medium low. When the pan has cooled down some, put the ginger in, and stir constantly. If the ginger starts to brown immediately, pick the pan up off the burner and keep stirring. Fry that for a minute or two.
When you're done, put it in a bowl and squeeze some lemon juice onto it to suit your taste and eat it.
I ate the rest of the lemon for dessert. Also, this would probably be good if you added chicken.
* remove the seeds and pith if you don't want the chilies to be too hot
** You definitely don't want to grossly undercook them either. I learned that the hard way the first time I ever cooked them. Seldom have I shat so furiously.

You could probably put Brussels sprouts, garlic, and feta cheese on a pizza and it would kick ass.

Going to have to take your word for it. I have a thing about pizza - should be bastardized and suburban in its variety - extra cheese, pepperoni, sausage or mushrooms. Anything else is just too high falootin' for this brown girl.

I really miss American pizza sometimes. Especially the 2 inch thick kind where half of that is CHEESE! If we ever find ourselves in the same city, we're totally going out for some pizza!

I have family all over the place in the US, and I try to get back to see them when I can. It's gonna be a while until my next trip though - I'm in the final bit of my studies, so I've gotta get my project and then my thesis finished up before I can leave the underground bunker that shields me from all sunlight.

Any chance of getting your goulash recipe, or is it too secret?
I mentioned the brussels sprouts to my husband and he expressed an interest, so perhaps I will try this. I -would- try it for myself (never had brussels sprouts before) but I strongly dislike peppers.
