Alternate Histories (or I assume you've read Ender's Game)

Just a quick $0.02 on books - I'm going to make the assumption that most here have read Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card). If you haven't, don't tell anyone, just quietly go out and buy it, read it and pretend that you'd done that years ago.

Another book by Card however, is Pastwatch - The Redemption of Christopher Columbus - it's a sort of alternate history deal, some setting details give it the 'sci-fi' tag but if you don't like sci-fi don't let that stop you. (If you do like sci-fi, timetravel - nuff said).

There were supposedly going to be two more Pastwatch books, but OSC seems to be in the midst of an awful lot . One more Ender book, one more Alvin book (?), the EG movie script...I'm sure there was another project but I can't remember it to save my life :\. I thought he had something planned for the Noah's ark timeline but I could be nuts.

At any rate, I enjoyed Pastwatch and think it would be cool if he did another.

AN EG MOVIE SCRIPT?!?!?!?!

/passes out

/wakes up

EG is one of my faves, but the others in the series weren't as exciting, in my opinion.

Well the Ender's Game movie thing has been going on for years, so I wouldn't get too excited just yet. There were rumours (at the time) of Haley Joel Osmond (I see dead ppl) but obviously he's sort of outgrown the role by now.

Which other books did you read? The next 3 (or is it four?) Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead, Children of the Mind are OK, but many find them disappointing after Ender's Game. My theory is because we loved the idea of the gifted kid(s), and he's no longer a kid in those books.

OSC recently addressed this issue by cranking out a bunch of books about the kids (other than Ender) and their lives after returning from Battle School. Ruth liked them, but I thought they seemed a little 'cranked out'. With the notable exception of Ender's Shadow, which is a concurrent story to Ender's Game. It's the story of Bean up to and through Ender's Game, from Bean's perspective. It is, in my opinion, a contender for first place with EG.

I thought the rumors of Jake Lloyd playing Ender were far more amusing.

Orson Scott Card -claimed- he is being paid to write a script and he must write a script before he works on other projects because he is, after all, a professional.

However, he said this in...*thinks* 2001 or 2002, at EnderCon (yes I am a nerd). He has since finished the Women of Genesis series, Magic Street, the 6th (?) Alvin book, and two more Shadow books.

At this rate, m2 and Gilae's kid will be eligible to star in the movie. As Graff. At any rate, if I recall correctly OSC is getting some help with the script now. Wolfgang Peterson is supposedly going to direct. Warner Bros has supposedly taken on the project. I say supposedly because there's always a way to get out of a contract if things aren't working out; if Warner Bros changes hands or something, a new owner could give the project the axe. So in my mind there aren't any absolutes until a script is finished. I might get excited about an EG movie if "THE SCRIPT IS FINISHED" is plastered all over my screen.

I very much enjoyed the first and last of the shadow books. The others were worth it for the enjoyment I got from one and two, but are not among my top favorites of all time. The Speaker books I loved from beginning to end . Ryala is right, they are not as exciting, but I enjoyed them just the same. OSC is considering writing a book that deals with Ender on the colonies that would tie the two series together.

At any rate, Pastwatch is a great read on its own, just don't hold your breath for more. The book stands on its own perfectly fine anyway.

I like every Ender/shadow book.

The last shadow book got me teary eyed.

I read Xenocide, Speaker for the Dead, and Children of the Mind. I liked the idea of the netwrok presence becoming self-aware and some other things were certainly interesting, but I don't think any of them maintained the pace and excitement of EG.

I heard the same rumors about the Ender's Game movie ages ago.. would have been nice if they had got it out in time for Halley Joel Osment to play the part. He has played some strangly adult kids. (AI and Sixth Sense ) so I think he would have done the role justice. Too late now though.

No way! Our kid would almost certainly play Bean!
