Child abuser and her victim to marry?
Mary Kay Letourneau was an elementary school teacher who started a sexual relationship with one of her students, Vili Fualaau, a sixth grader. She was convicted of child rape and sent to prison for seven years. But in two days she gets out. Her victim, with whom she had two children, is now 21, of legal age. He wants to get together with her when she gets out. He wants to marry her. She is exactly twice his age, 42, but she is the mother of his children, who have been taken care of by Vili's mother. Letourneau will be trying to get custody of them, once she is released. Would marriage represent a healing of a very twisted situation, or is it something a court should try to prevent, even though the two are now consenting adults?
Ok this is odd. I read a little blurb on the sunday paper yesterday with Veb. They're married now. I said, 'Think that'll last?'
He replied, 'Crazy is forever.'
She's like 43 and he's 22, its literally 10 years later. That's gotta say something for the kid. Is it real? Is it the money (is there any?) He's an adult now, but I'd go as far as saying that he's not any smarter than he was 10 years ago.
Discuss!!
How uncommon was it for old men to marry 13 year girls? In the phillipines my mother was asked, by her father, to marry a guy who was 40 something and windower when she was like 13. She said no (GROSS). This was back in the 50's. In generations passed, the reverse isn't uncommong.
Granted this is 2005 and she cheated on her husband and lost custody of her 4 other kids and fathered 2 with an underaged boy. Weirdness.
I think it wasn't until the 1950's that the concept of adult shifted to a much older state (18-21) whereas before it was common for adults to be on their own working / married at 14-15. Heck by 18 a woman was a spinster and too old for marriage! Remembering that the life expectancy then was much less than current times, the concept of a childhood is a modern invention, one I do enjoy I admit.
Honestly, I say those two are legal adults by all standards now so more power to them and we can see if it works or not. Since a woman outlives a man usually maybe it's not a bad idea to marry younger! I did and while it's only a year hey.. younger men have their perks :D
I don't really see what the law can do. She's paid her debt to society and now we're dealing with 2 adults *shrugs*.
"Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding, the cretins cloning and feeding, and I don't even own a TV'
Which in a twisted way lead to:
"Been around the world and I-I-I...I can't find my baby...I don't know when I don't know why, why he's gone away. And I don't know where he can be, he's my baby. But I'm gonna find him (someday, someway)"
On a quasi-related note, I know this word exists, but I can't remember what it is - can anyone give me a nice single word for 'rule by intelligentsia'?

I am inspired to quote 2 different songs:

Who are you? Seriously.
But yeah, they're adults. I could care less they're marrying, in fact it kinda either proves either 1. they were in love or 2. they are nuts or really 3. BOTH. But if they're happy :shrug Awesome. Their kids on the other hand, well I'll be waiting for the STAR to be printing some interesting stories about them 20 years from now O_O But hopefully not.
sick but not much can be done about it.
But like some of you have said, if it's true love it'll last, and if not, it won't. Only time will tell and frankly if they fade into obscurity, good. That's one less stupid story on the news. The only reason (like Maelarya and Temprah said) it's not right to us because our standards of living have changed, just as they'll continue to change. 'right' and 'wrong' have become pretty relitive and maybe 300 years from now it'll be the norm for an older woman to marry a younger man. *shrug* who knows.

I am 13 years older than my husband...but at least he was past the age of consent when we met. :P And you're right, they do have their perks. ;)
If people like this didn't marry and breed, where would all our future Banjo players come from?
ROFLMAO
That they got maried is no issue to me, they're both adults. I wonder how much the two kids know or will be told, though.
I have no problem understanding why someone would be attracted to someone much younger, as I definitely prefer younger men myself, but imo, under 21 is just completely off limits, period.
