Best software for "backing up" dvds and burning CD

I have a DVD-r drive, but I've never used it for anything more than making music CDs. I'd like to "backup" some copies of "legally purchased" media, but I'm not sure what software is the best for doing this. I've been looking into 123 copy DVD but I'm not sure if that is fully featured enough for what I want to do (like burn mpg video from my computer to a DVD that will be playable in other DVD players). Any advice is appreciated.

DVDdecrypter 3.5.4.0 (will never be a release after that) and DVDshrink for windows ripping.

Is there a way for me to burn say a TV show onto a DVD-r and then play it on my DVD player? How would i go about doing that?

Oh, Veb's done that. I'll poke him to post.

The show, depending on format would just need to be re-encoded. Nero or TMPGEnc will convert and burn most formats to VCD so you can watch from a CDR. A TV show would be overkill on a DVD since they are silly small compared to a 4gb movie.

TMPGEnc to convert almost all formats to VCD

Nero to convert/burn VCDs

VCD is supported by almost all DVD players within the past 3 years.

Check out some of the guides from www.doom9.org

They tell ya how to do almost anything with DVD's, Vid Files, VCD's all that stuff. Another plus is almost all the guides use freeware to do the ripping/burning and the links to it are at the top of the guide.

My computer was down for a bit, but now it is back up. I want to put a bunch of episodes of a TV series onto one DVD, but I'm not really sure how an the layers and the encoding and the streams and all that are a bit confusing. I have a bunch of avi files on my computer. How can I make it so I can play them on my Playstation (and maybe even jump directly to them if it isn't too hard to do)?

Depending on the orignal encoding you might have to use something like virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) to uncompress you file. Then you can use any DVD authoring software to write it to disk and setup chapters. Playstation and XBOX only support reading DVDs. They wont read DIVX, XVID or VCD.

Unfortuntely there are so many variables involved with encoding there is no real straight process. It is always dependent on what your encoded file is to start. A .avi could be DIVX, XVID or AVI or many other encoded formats and it could have different audio encodings like AC3 which is why you have to have a bajillion different codecs installed nowadays.

AIM/Yahoo me with specific questions if you need and I can answer as best I can. I am still learning to this on Windows also since I've always just stuck to OSS tools on Linux.
