To quoteth the Techie Husband:
If you haven't made any changes to your computer, and it's set to master, it won't see it.
Not sure if that helps much at all. But sounds like you are going to have to change harddrive settings to see both harddrives.
External hard drives
Alright, my father is asleep so I can't ask him, but are these things plug and play? He sent me his, its an ADS Technologies (brand) external hard drive with a 160gig hard drive in it. The HD is set to Master. I plugged it into one of the 2 (at this point both) firewire ports and its turned on. Little bugger is humming but the green light button isn't on.
It doesn't show up or ever read as new hard ware and yes I rebooted. What am I doing wrong?

I haven't made any changes to my computer and the website for the hardware says it needs to be set to master, but my father thinks it might be the hard drive itself. The firewire is showing that its connected and the drivers are there.
I'm going to switch out my working hard drive with this new one and see what happens.

Las, BEHAVE!
And having someone else plug it in or touch it always works. I use my husband for this. Hell, sometimes even just calling him at work and telling him the problem fixxes it. Frustrates the hell out of me. He just laughs. lol

I'm confused. You have an internal HD in you machine correct? You are plugging this into your usb, but it has to be set to master, correct? If the external one has to be set to master, should you move the jumper on the internal HD to slave? Or did you do this already?
Or does this not matter.

If it was bought retail, they can switch out the units and keep the old boxes if your inside the return policy. Trust me, I know.
As for the unit working on firewire. Is it USB and firewire? If so, plug it in the USB port see if you get a reaction from the machine. Its obvious its pulling current over the firewire port.
Secondly go to ADS web site, see if it requires a driver?
