Yah I am in the same boat. I hate to spend the money on a new computer.
I think I am going to buy a new mother board....CPU and Memory and leave everything else. I have a Geforce4 TI so that should still be ok. Harddrive is plenty big and everything else is fine.
I dont want to have to spend more than 500 bucks.
I am trying to wait until the last possible moment to do it to get the best deal.
Ah the price of gaming.

Here's the system that I built that was pretty cheap imo. I bet you could get this a heaping subset of the below stuff for < 900 at newegg.com, the only place I'd ever shop for computer parts. That place owns =D
Athlon 64 3200 --> $208.00
1 gig of Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 --> $77.00*2
Asus K8V SE Delux --> $95.00
Samsung 160gig SATA --> $$100.00 (I go w/ 2 in raid 0, best option imo, but thats up 2 u)
Sapphire ATI 9800 Pro 128 mb --> $197.00
I splurged on my case and got the cooler master:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-119-023&depa=1
for -->$135
With a thermaltake 420ish Watt ps for 36 bucks
A light on dvd/cd burner
Lite-On 12X DVD±RW Drive for 72
Audigy 2 --> 85 bucks
Total: 1082 + 30ish shipping no tax.
You could also wait and get a better gfx card b4 eq2 comes out, but i've had no problems w/ any games so far, including doom3 running 1280x1024 on next to highest settings (ati doens't even run it that well, but it's still goes at 50fps here np), DOW 1280x1024 w/ all gfx on smooth as silk, WoW 1280x1024 with all gfx smooth as silk too.
Hope that helps

bah..
www.pricewatch.com
or
www.ebay.com
those are the best prices.. imo
Only thing I really have to upgrade is my video cards.. geforce4 mx400/440 aren't supported by eq2.(SUCKS)
I'm looking at just going straight to a card that should last a while.. geforce 5700 256mb.
Hope that helps some.

Ok, so here's what I think about those 2 places:
Sure, you might find a place with a few bucks cheaper somewhere else on pricewatch for a particular product, you'll be pressed to beat:
1. Newegg's ungodly return policy. Send it it in, they'll next day it free of charge, no questions asked.
2. Newegg's ungodly shipping. Super low prices, will arrive 2 days 90% of the time, even with 3-5+ day shipping.
3. Almost everything there is consisistently low price, so if you're buying a whole computer, it'd be retarded buying from 5 differnet places just so you can shave of 30 bucks.
Unless you're picking up 1 thing and want to risk a lot of hassle if something goes wrong, I'd stick w/ newegg for everything. Once you go newegg, you'll never go back.
As for those cards:
Any MX card is a budge card, and will therefore lack a lot of the pixel shading ability required for eq2.
I would guess even that 5700 will have it hard with eq2. 256 mb isn't going to help you at all here, at best it might give u like 1-2 fps max over the 128. Ram is so completely overrated on a gfx card. If you don't already have that card, why not get a 9800 pro for a few bucks more that'll punch so much more power? Hell, why get a card until the day b4 the game comes out then see what's good then?
I'm really really skeptical about the performace a 5700 is going to give you w/ eq2. It depends on what type you get, LE, reg, or Ultra, but even with the Ultra, I'd be worried about how playable it will be at decent settings. I think I'd fork out the $$ and go w/ the fx 6XXX or 9800 pro - that card is so solid. Actually, I'd just wait :-D
