While we're on the subject of retailers, I heard there is a new Ikea that opened in Atlanta. I think I could make a day trip of that .... makes me happy.

Yessssss~

My grandmother is visiting and she wanted to go to Ikea here. We spent all frickin day there (yes, I love Ikea, but now add bickering grandparents who want to buy you things and make you feel guilty) and I felt like I was gonna pass out when we left but nooooo we had to go to Linens 'n' Things on the way home too.

I did get hooked up with a lot o' shit though... *grin*

What kind of cool shit do you have from Ikea? I only have small things from there, because I only get to go when I visit my parents in metro D.C. Even if we drive, it's 11 hours and the vehicle is already too cramped with other crap to bring anything bit home.

I have a hanging pot rack, a countertop dish rack, those little square wood framed mirrors, various dishes and containers, candle holders, magnetic message board, some linens, CD racks, etc.

I have another friend here in Nashville who is from Maryland, only an hour from where my parents are (small world), so she misses Ikea too. I think we're really going to make a day or weekend trip to Atlanta in the next few months and spend gobs of money at Ikea.

I better start saving.

I lovelovelove Ikea.. We spent much time / money there after we bought our house, yup. Making a day of it is easy.. and when you need a break they have good food there too, really cheap as well. Much envy here of your new stuff Ry! Which couch did you get? There's a few I've been seriously considering. We need a new one.. never buy a light colored couch when you have cats and dogs /sigh.

You can order online and have it shipped I believe...
Temprah 20 years ago
Yep! Both Ikea and Target can be ordered online for delivery. But I know with Target you can end up paying almost as much for shipping as the items, so it's not always a good idea.

OR...you could just visit me in Chicago and we can go to Ikea here.
Transport would be a bitch hehe.

I'm finding the irony here. In fact I was of the same opinion until a few years ago that there was some sort of difference between the major market discount retail stores, Target, Walmart, etc.

However, after living in Washington and visiting other stores I can say that the only difference to said stores is their outward appearance and location. I mean can anyone honestly say that these stores have better quality, customer service or goods than any other one? I'm talking about generally here, not one specific instance out of billions, I can do that all day myself.

For myself the goods that I buy at these stores vary little if at all in quality and customer service from store to store, so I figure I'll use the store closest to me and not worry about the name of the store.

I think where Target and Walmart generally differ is quality of product and price. I personally prefer what you might find at Target...but yeah I guess it really does depend on the store you're closest too.

I agree with Gil.

Once upon a time, Target was on it's way to becoming as run down as KMart stores are. Unlike K-Mart, however, Target spent the money and made the changes they needed to during the past 15 or so years to achieve the integrity and widespread success that they have today.

Target stores today are cleaner, better maintained and stocked, with slightly higher quality merchandise and much higher customer service than Wal-Mart. Brand spanking new Wal-Mart stores might be the exception. There are comparable prices and quality of certain products between the two stores, but I still feel that Target on a whole holds a higher standard.

THE TARGET EXPERIENCE:
I walk into Target and the store is bright, spacious, and clean. Shelves are well stocked, areas well labled, displays pleasing to the eye, and merchandise easy to find. Most of the Target employees that I've encountered have had the outward appearance of being equally clean and tidy, while still being casual in khaki and red. Customer service as a whole at Target has been positive. Target has a somewhat strict return policy, but I don't hold it against them because I know they are protecting themselves from the dishonesty that lives in our society.

THE WAL-MART EXPERIENCE:
With the exception of the brand new store I visited this week, my experiences at Wal-Mart have been painful. Most of the Wal-Mart stores I've been in have been cluttered, crowded, unorganized, and unclean. Most of the Wal-Mart associates I've met don't care about their appearance any more than they care about serving you. Wal-Mart has a very lenient return policy, which I think opens their doors to consumers and theives taking advantage of their services. Too many times have I heard someone say "It doesn't matter if you didn't buy it there, return it to Wal-Mart. They'll take anything back."

There are things I would shop for at Wal-Mart, yes. Two weeks ago, I bought an inexpensive bookcase there because they had the best price in town. However, if someone gave me an ultimatum that I must only shop at Target or only shop at Wal-Mart, I'd choose Target any day.

I had a brain fart and couldn't think of the word, but, yes, that's them ^_^

Temprah, I got the Klippan sofa. It says it's a 2-seater, but I can easily fit 3 slim/average people on it or 2 mammoth huge people. My living room is really narrow and long, so I couldn't go much bigger.

I like walmart, mostly because the kiddo clothes are so cheap but last a hella long time. The shoes are crap though. I loved Target when we were near one and I agree, it's much cleaner.
