today's technology is a joke

Went out yesterday to buy a new video card for my computer, sold an arm and a leg for it. When i got home, i had 30mins to plug it in and get it working before my TV shows came on.

I killed it i guess. I had to call Gateway tech support and yell at them for making crappy motherboards.

Then i called Best Buy and gave some new guy a hard time. He wanted me to give them my computer for 2 - 4 weeks to get it fixed. i said 'why dont you just take my legs too'. I do webdesign for a living. Taking my computer away for a month is damn near murdering me. So they tell me to call this # since when i bought my computer, i bought in-house repair warranty good for 3 years ( i've never been so happy to buy extended warranty ). So now, i wait at max, 8 days to have my computer working again.

Perfect timing. Today I had a meeting with a client about designing two of their websites. I had to let them know it will be possibly 10 days before I can start work on their sites

/rude technology. Seems the more advanced we get, the crappier things are built.

1.) Use a mac, they usually have better hardware to go with the better OS. QA/QC for the win.
2.) Have a second computer as stand by. I always have a spare machine on line, just incase.

1 - yes, use a mac, because they are so worth the $$, and they are so widely used everything is made for them... no thanks.

2 - i have a 2nd computer, but its like riding a tri-cycle instead of a harley.

I completely agree. The last video card that I bought, took 2 returns to get one that worked, and even then, I only got about a year's use out of it before I had to replace it. No more buying expensive video cards for me.

I'm also going to have to take my monitor in to have it repaired as my screen is so bright, that even with the brightness turned down to 0, black looks like charcoal gray. Of course, it decided to do this mere days after the warrantee expired. /rude Sony

Website design, a lot of the upper end programs are made for them. Macromeda/Adobe are all about Mac, BBedit I know is popular for a code based piece. Besides that everything except for Frontpage is made for Mac, so they got some programs out there. Atleast the ones that count.

But thats neither here nor there.

As for the tricycle, I can't help you there. I can give you a push down hill so you can gain speed though :)

Mac's are overrated. All of the Mac's I've used have not been the uber stable machines everyone thinks they are. Since Adobe is cross platform...I see no point in spending a ton of dough on a mediocre machine. I can take my psd done on a PC and open it on a Mac and it works just fine. As crappy as some parts for the PC are, by my experience, PC's are as stable if not more then Mac's are, and the money you save building a PC, it's crazy to buy a Mac...but that's just IMO (which just happens to be right)

It wasn't until Service Pack 2 that Windows XP became anywhere near as stable as a Mac.

Of course, a system's stability is only balanced by the ability of the user to maintain it.

i had my gateway for a year. and probably for 8 months of that year, I wasn't running SP2. I never had any sort of problems.

each individual machine, mac or pc, has its own issues and quality of performance.

Macs are awkward. I've used them before. and I'm not referring to just webdesign software, as i do far more than just webdesign on my computer. Rikr was dead on. they just aren't worth the price.

Mac mini's start under $500. What are you talking about price?
ROzbeans 20 years ago
I just want a red mac cuz it's cute.
Saraquael 20 years ago
The price of the mac mini adds up prety quickly when you factor in all the items to make it a viable option. Plus, the ram is capped at 1gb I believe.. which is pretty burtal for any kind of print work. It's pretty much best served as a transitional machine for those who are planning on moving to a more fully loaded machine at a later point.

i had a post about the mac mini vs. the g5 but my browser timed out.

g5s are starting $2k. thats not an option for me.

as saraq said, the mac mini starts at $600, but its not the kind of computer you're going to do everything on without spending a buttload of money getting it maxed out. which is mac's problem. the hardware alone is just too pricy for the average consumer.
Prosecution 20 years ago
At $500-$600 mac mini's will preform like your average $1000 Windows CPU bought off the shelf.

It can't compete with with a $2k PC that was built or a $2k Powermac.

But I was refering to replacing your tricycle that you are having difficulties working on.

If I had the cash, I'd totally have a tricked out Mac. Those studio displays make me moist.
Vex 20 years ago
i wont bother fixing this tricycle unless it totally stops working. even then, if its to expensive i wont do it. i'll just wait til i buy a new main computer and do the handmedown thing.
