Grrr -- school gripes

http://www.inkymouse.com/school/lousy.jpg

I have to create an 'original magazine ad rough' using the logo and 3 images linked above.

My assignment:
• Create a magazine ad rough.
• Scale your rough to 50% of the standard magazine ad size. (4-1/4" horizontal x 5- 1/2" vertical).
• In your rough layout, use all of the visuals and the logo (provided).
• Also, you need to write a headline and a claim (slogan or tag), and combine them with the visual components of your advertisement rough.
• Create your rough on computer, or by hand and scan it.
• Post it to the Discussion Area. Make sure your rough is proportional and all of the elements are included.

Gripe #1: It's not very original when I am forced to use these shitty images and this shitty logo.

Gripe #2: What you see is what I get. Those images are the exact size and quality I have been provided with.

Gripe #3: WTF does this have to do with this class? I'm in 'Art Direction' right now, which is about 'examining the role of the art director in producing multi-faceted design projects. Exercises will train students in coordinating creative efforts from concept to finished product. A team environment is emphasized and aims to acquaint the students with the necessity of leadership ability, communication and negotiating skills.'

I've already taken 'Electronic Design' where we focused on advertising trends and layouts, and I've already taken 'Digital Image Manipulation' where we took shitty photos and made them look better. WHY AM I DOING THIS ASSIGNMENT?

Thank you, bitch sesison is over. I feel better.

That was the first class I ever took. You're right, some of those assignments WERE ass. Who is your instructor. I hated the guy I had for that class and it left me with a very bad first impression of AIO. Thankfully I've had better teachers since him.

Here are my projects for that class. Feel free to plagiarize.

Well...not to put a wrench in your ranting...but what you've been asked to do is something that our Art Director has to do on a fairly regular basis. We're often given crappy images and have to make decisions as to whether to use them or not and/or how to use them and choosing what size ad etc. Now granted, this particular assignment doesn't allow for much in the way of the 'decision' making portion of the Art Director position...but sometimes the client doesn't give you any space for movement in the way of decisions. I guess all I'm saying is that I wish I could have the opportunity to take some of those classes with some of those seemingly retarded assignments so that I was better prepared to deal with the often retarded real work assignments I'm given now ;)

(In short, I should've gone back to art school...)

I think what I'm getting at is that when your Art Director is doing design work, they're being a designer, not an Art Director. This class is supposed to be about learning what an Art Director does, not what a designer does. The two go hand-in-hand, yes, but there is a difference.

If this assignment were about pairing up with another student and choosing who is to be the Art Director making decisions and who is to be the designer, it would make more sense. Instead, there is this singular design project out of the blue with no apparent link to the rest of the course material. It's busy work, and I'm paying too damn much for school to be given busy work.

I'm the Art Director, the Graphic Artist, the Marketing Department all in one. I know this seems like a jerk off assignment, but hang in there. Most likely you will wear multiple hats when you get a job. (I told you about the Art Institutes International) I hated that place...I went to the Art Instititue of Dallas. I wish it would no longer be in existance, it is extremely overpriced, and I also wish I would have gone to a 4 year school.

Edit: can you manipulate these images?

What Rik said was kind of my point. Our Marketing department has too much going on for the Art Director not to be highly involved in the design of every project. The lower the level of designer, the more crappy sort of designs you get to do. For example, our Art Director would be responsible with coming up with the general lay out and design of an entire proposal/marketing piece. The designer would be in charge of designing the pieces of the piece (like the charts, or whatever silly graphic the broker thinks should go in there). When it comes down to my level, I get the fun jobs like redrawing maps and floorplans and formatting the powerpoint presentation all the graphics go into. And then the art director will decide if what I did is crap or not and/or matches his/her original concept.

Though honestly our company is seperated funny...our Marketing Department is more of a "business development" department. And then we have a Corporate Communications department that is in charge of developing ads for magazines and the such like. I don't technically belong to EITHER department but I get work from both. Which reminds me I have to put together some lame ad for Crain's online.

I guess though for your purposes it IS just busy work since in the end you'll still have to reach for your entire group of schooling knowledge for whichever job you end up taking. I'm just thinking that some of your assignments may not be as stupid as you think they are. Well...they are...but you'll have some pretty damn stupid things to do when you actually get paid to do it too ;)
