Is Emo? I have a vague idea, but not a very good one - I guess I'm to old to keep up anymore :( Is it like whiney punk?

Yeah, sorta. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo
" Like the Goth scene, people who focus on emo music often share a dark and emotional psyche that makes them feel like they belong outside the mainstream. They tend to thrive on the emotional ups and downs that are typically prevalent in emotionally-driven music such as emo. At the same time, fans of other rock genres, which often emphasize aggression and anger, accuse emo of being too "soft" and whiny."
Of course, my fiance has been on this kick lately to tell people to "stop being emo".

Yeah pretty much. Think Linkin Park and songs like Numb or In the End. A once failed boyband now turned mainstream alternative, who still continue whining about their failures.
Much like the spoiled suburbanite teen who thinks the world is against him because he has a midnight curfew.

Linkin Park isn't emo at all. They are kind of angsty but definately not emo. Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday, and Dashboard Confessional would be good examples of emo bands that you might have heard of.
