Anu is a Comic Snob!

Nah, if he was a true comic snob, then he wouldn't even care about the X-Men, for the most part. He would be telling us how they need to make a movie about Indie Comic X. That is a snob.

I don't know. I, for the most part, liked the previous two X-Men and generally I know about their storylines and histories.

For me, a movie has to basically just suck. Not suck as an interpetation, but suck as a movie in its own right for me to naysay the translation. I think in their attempts to compress the timelines for these stories and characters they have done a generally decent job. It would be hard, and very boring, for them to properly explore and delve into the character development that is allowed to progress over multiple books, annuals, one-shots, etc. That's not to say I don't point out errors when I see them and that leads to try to sum up what exactly that character's history is to Roz, and in doing so I have to explain another 4-5 characters.

Think of it this way Anu, if you had to explain the character development of say, Cyclops, how many different people would you have to at least briefly explain their own history so that people have a proper frame of reference? It would be impossible to just explain his history and have any hope of someone understanding what geek-speak you are talking about. So with these movies, I'm glad that they simplified these down, it gets it out to the masses, who might, just might express an interest in a medium, that while though of as childish, has some very interesting stories in their own right.

There were parts about the Xmen movie I found irritating and I agree with Anu that a comic book turned movie is entirely different than a book turned movie. Hell the scenes are already drawn out. The problem is the 40 year time span of the characters and the realization that everyone and his brother wants to see THEIR favorite Xmen character in the plot. The same problem occurred with the cartoon (which doesn't match the original comic either). I enjoyed the movies as entertaining...I didn't walk out of the theatre half asleep or anything...but it would've been nice if they had adhered more closely to the story and the introduction of new characters, given how many characters they already had to choose from, did seem fairly ridiculous as did the introduction of story lines that were minor in comparisons to some of the more intense and well-known Xmen plotlines. I wondered if they did it only to appeal to a younger (teen) audience or if they had trouble with character development because of the number of characters.

At any rate, I will wait to reserve judgement until I see it. My favorite character is Storm so as long as there is plenty of thunder and lightening and chick with white eyes beating up on peeps, I will be entertained. But in a strictly "Xmen" fan critique I would agree that the movies fell far short of what they could be or should be. (And as a comparison, I think the Harry Potter movies, including the newest one, were pretty damn close to what they should be.)

As an aside, I didn't think the casting was too bad. Their choice for Dr. Moira for example is pretty spot on imo as were their choices for Wolverine and Xavier. I could do with a more hardcore Storm and definitely an older Rogue.

I don't mind it. As a fan of the comics and of the second movie (first one was pretty weak) I'm actually open to alternate interpretations of the characters. I always viewed the movies as being more along the "Ultimate" lines as opposed to the strict original characters. Although the details aren't quite right all the time, I think the spirit still holds true.

I'll watch anything with superheros in it :D

I want this to be in theatres next week. I hate waiting. :P

Kelsey Grammer as Beast? Never saw that coming but really come to think of it the wry humor and intellectual banter.. couldnt have picked much better for personality. I just cant see FRASIER as an action hero! :)

As someone who never read the comic books, I enjoyed both movies and I'm looking forward to the 3rd. Not knowing the background of the characters, I enjoyed them in the movies and the choices of who played them. I mean, come on, how could you NOT like Patrick Stewart as a commanding figure? :D
