Special FX made hellboy pretty decent.
Spiderman 1 looked like it was done with a logitech web cam. It ruined it for me.
Special Effects
This thread is for good old fashioned eye candy :). While I believe that plot>fx, I think special effects can be part of what makes a movie fun and enhance the storytelling.
So....what was a special effect that really stood out to you the first time you saw it?
What movies do you think balanced great special effects with great storytelling?
Admit it...what was a movie that you loved purely for good special effects even though the plot was so so?
Have poor special effects, or poor use of special effects, ever ruined a movie for you?

Yeah hellboy sucked but good graphics. Jason x sucked but come on, that was a cool looking jason.
I think the Matrix stands out in everyone's mind. Or Star Wars. I watch older sci fi movies now and think, god what would it look like if the FX was done now?

Special effect that really stood out:
The transformation scene in American Werewolf in London blew me away. I was nine when I saw that movie (my mom put up a sheet for the nude scenes, but the horrible graphic violence was okay to go!) and it remains one of the best werewolf transformations I have seen. For some reason I don't have the tolerance for violence that I once did though, so I doubt I could handle watching it again to refresh my memory :(.
Well balanced movies:
I might be being too kind here because I really enjoyed the book, but Jurassic Park (at the time, of course) made me squee with delight and was an enjoyable story. I think the dinosaur rendering was pretty breakthrough at the time too.
Not that good special effects -have- to be breakthrough technology. A scary foot print or a creepy clicking sound can be infinatly better than seeing the monster. A good example would be The Forgotten. While they got a tad fancy at the end, the effects were simple, blended well, and scared me (and everyone in the theater) good and proper.
Movies that sucked, but wow were they nice to look at:
The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Final Fantasy movie. While the story sucked (imo) it was so nice to look at that I didn't mind the eight bucks so much. I wouldn't see it again or buy it on DVD though.
Special Effects that ruined it for me:
/sigh Starwars Episode 2 had a shot with me until the arena scene toward the end. I thought the creature effects (hi, aren't creature effects supposed to be, like, starwars' thing?) were embarrassingly bad and thus the movie had no redeeming value for me, other than to really want a pretty dress like Natalie Portman's. But yeah, Starwars coulda been a contender if not for that. And that...sand....speech.../shudders.
Oh, here's another question: Any movies that you love in spite of having really horrible special effects?
Evil Dead 2. *nods*
Edit: There is only one "r" in Jurassic

I think that's the kind of thinking that got George Lucas into trouble :(. I'm anticipating Starwars 3 if nothing else because the mind f*cking will finally come to an end! Stop messing with my movies!

Alas, Star Wars EP 1&2 sucked salty chocolate balls. =/ The acting is so stiff. It makes me cry. :(

Yeah, but in #2 when Yoda gets down and freaks out all over Dooku (sp?) I remember when he opened his robe and that saber moved to his hand saying, "Ah hell, you done pissed Yoda off." I thought that one scene was pretty cool. :)

Bad, no HORRIBLE special effects and even worse acting:
Basket Case
I can't say enough about how bad this movie is. You have to see it just to believe it. The story is about a guy that has a horribly disfigured conjoined twin growing out of his side, which is surgically removed and thrown away in a pile of garbage. They seem to share some sort of telepathic link, because the normal looking one goes to fish him out of the trash heap and proceeds to put him in a picnic basket and take care of him in the attic.
Needless to say, basket boy is pissed, and decides that eating people is the way to go. :?
They use stop-motion photography, for the effects, but I guess they didn't think about how it would look on film if they moved the figures more than a few inches at a time for each shot.
It is really only worth seeing if you want to punish yourself, it's really that bad.

Oh, just wait. A spokes person at Lucas Arts was quoted as saying...
"I'm under NDA when it comed to Episodes 7, 8, and 9. Sorry"
*NDA=Non Disclosure Agreement
Star Wars Rumors
Which means he gets to REALLY f*ck with your mind when/if he makes 7, 8, and 9 to finish his trilogy of trilogies.

Yeah, that scene was great. The bad part was.. I was laughing so hard at the flippy bitch I had to leave the theater. I can watch it now, but at the time it was just soooo damn funny to watch.

Evil Dead was intentionally designed to be a B rated movie. Sam Raimi is just that type of person. Had this movie not been filmed so poorly it would have lost much of its comic value reducing it to a true B movie. There are few things truly great in Hollywood, the Evil Dead series is one of those things. Evil Dead 3 of course being the best of them.

Evil Dead 3 was alright but it was so commercialized by then. I mean they switched the girlfriend at the store to Bridgette Fonda for christ sakes. That made me sad. Evil Dead 2 will remain one of the funniest movies I have ever seen and one of my all time fav's.

What Dreams May Come - The flowers scene is my all time fav. Karen Ansel was the Technical Supervisor for it and I met her and proceeded to drool...
Fifth Element I totally love too for SFX... Labyrinth - I guess it's not SFX, but I adore good puppeteers.
I could probably list a million, but they would be the ones that stand out in my mind.
