Dead Witch Walking
This is an interesting look into the world of Vampires, Witches, Lycanthropes and all things magical. The lead character is well rounded and Kim Harrison gives us the opportunity to assume a lot about her particualr brand of reality.
This was a very good read and I am looking forward to the next three books in the series. (Book four isn't due out until July though)

I've read that, along with the other 2 out by her atm. Awesome books. If you haven't, you might try the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlene Harris, and the huge Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K Hamilton. The Southern Vampire Mystery books are fun little reads, similar to Harrison. Hamilton's series is a lot more romance style (and lot more sex hah), but still very good reads.

I really liked the first couple of Anita Blake books, but then she turned into some vampire goddess. Also to much of the latter books are devoted to the somewhat odd sexual encounters she has. The series has lost my interest.

OH nooo...I've just started in on The Lunatic Cafe and have read The Killing Dance, Circus of the Damned, and Guilty Pleasures and loved them all. And in all those she only had one sexual encounter... with the vampire in the TKD...I was hoping for more, in the books that followed! :S

You do know that the Anita books have a cronilogical order don't you? You've missed some really great stuff reading them out of sequence. :D I suggest you start all over with Guilty Pleasures and go from there. *nods sagely*

I just started re-re-reading the Anita Blake series. I don't think any of the sex that takes place in the series is out of place at all, as it all pertains to the story. Besides, she writes fuckin' hawt sex scenes so who cares?
Mistress Wit gave me this big list of authors to try during my Anita downtime (read: omgs when's she gonna finish the next book already!?!!?). Meant to tell you, hon, I made it thru all but one. Well, the first book from all of them anyway, and doubles on a couple. Reading Dark Desire at the moment. This whole Carpathian concept is kinda cool. The ones I really wanna get more of are the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Read the first book of hers, then my best friend let me borrow the second. I'm hooked, but stupid bookstore didn't have the next one I needed so gonna have to do the Amazon thing again soon lol.
Oh! If you want a quick, laugh your ass off read, pick up the series by Mary Janice Davidson, Undead and Un-. First is Undead and Unwed. I just read the first three in like 2 days. Think there's two others out now from doing a quick search on Amazon. *adds to mental wish list* Another one that was funny as hell, but don't go there if the sex stuff bugs you cuz well, it's all up in there, was Master of the Night by Angela Knight. Oh my gods there were so many laughs in that one and the story was kinda cool. It also has a different take on the whole vampire theme, adding a Camelot twist ;)
Need to make a big ol' vampy reading list one of these days lol.

I just thought some of the sex in the last book or two was just added for the hell of it and didnt really do much for the story. I thought the first few books were much stronger than the last couple. I also liked in the first few books how she was sort of a "normal" person but in the later books she has extraordinary supernatural powers. Its been a while since I read them, maybe I will reread and re-evaluate.

If you like Vampire stories has anyone read Tanya Huffs series about Henry Fitzroy? Blood Debt, Blood Price etc? or Anne Bishops Black Jewel Trilogy....not really about vampires but I thought the race she created "the blood" had been influenced by the occult, plus the series is a great read.

Haven't read those, will have to check 'em out. As to the whole Anita sex thing, think about it this way. The series takes place over the matter of a few years. In that time she's exploring herself, who and what she is. I understand where you're coming from about the first few books her being "normal" and there not being any real sex to speak of. But... she is growing throughout the series, both as a person and a power. To stay the same after all she goes thru would be wrong to me. Granted she could probably have brushed over the sex scenes a bit more, but a lot of people actually like them, myself included. Now the hubby, who actually enjoyed the books almost as much as me, would likely agree with you. Trust me, I argue with him rather vehemently about it too ;)

Its not that I object to sex in books or that it makes me squeamish, not at all but it just detracted from the overall story for me, i dunno, maybe im making too much of it. Or maybe its just that I felt the overall story was a lot weaker in those books. It reminds me of the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, not the sex but that the series has gotten so much weaker than the first few books. I havent even bothered to do more than skim the last 3 of that series. I wish he would just finish the damn thing.

Yes, I know there is an order to the books, but The Killing Dance was the first one I received and read. I've since been reading them in order, and it hasn't really detracted from their enjoyment to know a little bit about what's going to happen down the line. It's kinda fun actually, to see now how everything leads up to The Killing Dance.
And as for the power she amasses, I agree with Eve...it stands to reason with the bites she keeps getting, and the powers they give her, that she would gain more over time.
I've read four of her books now in two weeks, and considering these are the first books I've read in YEARS!!! I'm excited....
I've also read a little by Mary Janice Davidson (short story) and will read her as soon as I exhaust Hamilton. :D
Another reason why I like Anita Baker...I rp a human author on Sanguine Affliction who is in love with a vampire...so it's fun to see the differences in characters, and situations...I can sort of 'relate'...? lol
Oh...and the sex? ICING! Yum!
