DvD burner wont burn...of course not

I AM ABOUT TO LOSE MY FUCKING MIND.

So besides the fact that i have to reformat AGAIN, while trying to back up my external drive on Veb's new dvd burner, the fucking thing keeps telling me...

Encountering a problem and oh i'm stealing your shit when you go to work tomorrow and killing your dog, you worthless middle management wench.

Or something like that. Why? Why won't it just copy? It's a dvd burner, I have a blank DVD in the burner...what the fuck?

Do you have the correct drivers?
Did you "prepare" the DVD? (Some CDRW and DVD-writing drives require the disc to be "prepared" by right-clicking it in Explorer and choosing "format", though this depends on your drive and your version of windows. I think you said you have XP, so it should automatically indicate it needs to prepare the disc)
Do you have extra drivespace to store the image of the DVD before it's burned?

Should be fine drivers wise, it's a brand new fucking computer. Literally 1 month old. It didn't ask to prepare the dvd either, it saw the dvd and admitted it was empty but when i tried to copy something well within it's storage limit, it got quite rude with me.

There's no burn program on there, other than the windows version but yes there's space to image the dvd.

I'm using Veb's brand new computer, not my computer. I just have bad luck on ANY computer, apparently. I need to be horribly spoiled by my father, I think. =/

Straight from the microsoft site

"Windows XP doesn't contain built-in support for burning DVDs. However, Microsoft plans on including built-in support for DVD write capability in the next version of Windows. For a look at the issues involved in planning and developing which DVD technologies to support, read the Windows Platform Development article, DVD Writing Support and Windows."

I may be misreading this, but you say you are trying to back up your external hard drive to DVD. Are you running your OS from an external drive? If not (and I doubt you are), you wouldnt need to reformat that to reinstall Windows so you wouldnt need to back it up first.

But, yeah, Nero is good software. If you do, in fact, need to back up to DVD then try using that.

Oh and I forgot to mention the golden rule of computer problems. 99.99% of the time computer problems are caused by User Error 8).

Veb's computer is brand new.

I need to reformat my piece of shit computer that hates me.

I tried backing up my external hard drive on VEB's computer/dvd burner.

Now he has to reformat my computer again, put win 98 and upgrade it from the 2 legal copies of winxp that we have.

I tried backing up my external hard drive on VEB's computer/dvd burner..

This part is what originally threw me for a loop, but I tend to :eek when people get into their minds a specific way to do things.

If it's an external drive... why not just disconnect it til the main PC's reformat is done?

I could understand if it was operating intermittently, then I would definately want to dump the data. But... why? Back it up later after all the OS shiz is dealt with.

I have about 300 poser files that I need to keep backed up, is the thing. =x
Mileron 20 years ago
But if they're on the external drive, powered down, in a safe place, you can back them up after...
